Dear all,
Its been cold up here in norcal for the past 2 weeks (like 45-60 degrees). Kibby has been sounding a little congested in the mornings, but then fine later in the day. I did notice that maybe her snoring does seem a little louder too? She has woken up and sounded like she was trying to "hock up" some flem or something this morning for a couple of minutes, but just went back to sleep after.
She doesn't have a fever, is acting totally normal, has good appetite. She does seem to be having a little bit more tearing going on, but not gooky, just clear. I have been using a humidifier the last 3 days to see if it would help.
She had walking pnuemonia when I first got her... and ever since then I have been worried everytime I hear her get congested. The only way we even realized to take her to the vet that time was because she wasnt excited about eating a treat, ate it anyways, then threw it up with a bunch of flem.
However, the last time I thought she sounded flemmy , the vet listened to her lungs and I think she said it was just "upper respritory?" so I shouldn't worry.
SO my question is.. is there a way you can tell whether or not its pneumonia? Can I put my ear up to her chest and listen to her breath? what am I listening for? crackling or liquidy noises on her exhale or inhale?
OR Do bullys get more congested when there is cold weather? Does cold weather make them tear more? we dont turn on the heat that often ( maybe for about 2 hours , twice a week if its really cold), its usually a cool 65 in here, is that too cold? could it just be a cold? should she wear her jacket, everytime we walk when its less then 50 degrees outside? This is my first winter with her, so I just want to be sure that I am keeping her warm enough and doing anything else I should be doing to "winterize" my bully! thanks!
what a sweetiepie!- how much is too much humidity?
I love the picture! so what kind of air is considered "dry"... i thought everyone was just refering to anytime when it gets really cold and the windows stay shut. I never really thought about that in norcal, maybe it doesn't get that "dry". Are humidifiers for bullies only necessary and helpful in certain areas of the u.s.? Its been cold here (45-60, yes thats cold for us california people!), and sometimes the wind will take it down another 10 degrees... then it will rain like once a week or so...so would this area be humid enough and will I not need to use a humidifier? Thanks!
seems a little better but....
Kibby seems a little less congested , maybe the humidifier is helping, but I'm still not sure. She is totally fine during the day and only seems to have this issue when she first wakes up in the morning. I know that bullies naturally have some amount of flem, so I am not sure if I am just jumping to conclusions.
I will probably take her in to the vet next week to be sure. Unfortunately I had to wait a little since its xmas and funds are a little tight right now...I know the last time she had pneumonia, they had to do bloodtests and xrays... wondering if they could just give me some antibotics this time then going thru the whole 9 yards again? but I guess there is no way for them to be sure unless they do the tests right? thanks for following up and I will be sure to post as soon as I get the results.
Kibby
Let us know how Kibby is? One thing I miss is everyone seeking advice and then to find out the real cause of problems, and share, that's if you'd want to share.

I would take her to the vet and have a talk
about how you can tell the difference in the future. If she has been sick before it's probably worth it for the vet to have a listen just to be sure.

Humidity long
Don't discount the vet, as he's been sick before, But.....I have more trouble breathing when the humidity is high. Isn't it wet/ damp up there in Northern C? We love Arcata, and Lewiston and the Trinity river and the lake up there, [have I told my life story?] But it seems moist. I use electric heaters here [Indiana] to help in the daytime, and the furnace at night. Dottie got her hair cut shorter than it's ever been in the 38 years we have been together, as the heat is on 72. My little puppy sleeps in his carrier, with a baby comforter, a large towel on the floor of the carrier. The carrier I set on the couch and cover with a blanket to keep him from drafts. I've got cages, but they are too brezzy even covered for me. My boy is sure warm when he gets out of the carrier.
This is Buddy the big Brother. Buddy steals from Brother sometimes, to get a little shuteye.
