we took him in because he was seeming stiff in his back and the vet xrayed him and he has some very deformed vertibrae in one spot in the middle of his back and a few not so deformed at the end near his tail. We're putting him on an antiinflammatory and we're going to curtail his roughhousing but other than that, I don't know what the options are. Our vet can refer us to an orthopedist (his name is Dr Bone is you can believe that), but I don't know if this can be surgically corrected or not. He's doing well right now, but vet said if something catastrophic happens, he could wind up paralyzed down the road. Does anyone have any knowledge about this? I just want him to have a long, happy life, he's only 2 1/2 right now. Except for one episode of stiffness and leg shaking, you'd never know anything was wrong with him.

Helen, the butterfly effect is what Chez has...
along with a couple that seem to be split. He has no other problems except for his leg (he was born with a dislocated radius that was surgically fixed and he walks fine now). At the moment he feels good and it's hard to keep him from roughhousing, but we want to prevent any problems. It's encouraging that your boy made it to 11, I want Chester around for a long time, he's the sweetest boy we've ever had.

They cannot surgically fix it
but he may have to take meds as above and yes he can live a long happy life. I have a friend with a boy who has 5 in his back and he is fine, a little stiff but is quite happy to laze around and enjoy the sun. The vet said that later in life he may end up losing control of his bowels because his is quite severe.
I do not believe as above that this is all that common, all of my dogs are x-rayed and cleared for any HV in their backs before being bred from.
I hope you will let your bulldogs breeder know because this is a hereditary condition.

Unless he seems to be in pain I think he will be fine if he has
the vet can give you medicine for it or if not too bad aspirin should work.

He can have a really full life if it is only the hemi vertibrae
problems that these other dogs have had. I had a pup about 30 years ago that had hemi vertibrae down his whole spine , the vet showed me the xrays and his spine looked like the bones were shaped like butterflies, all open along the top. His condition did not show up until he was 9 mo. old and we showed him at the AKC centenial show in Philadelphia that year before I knew there was anything wrong. When he was around 9 mo. one morning he woke me up crying and could not lift his head up off the floor nor get on his feet. I rushed him to my vet at the time , a well known bulldog vet here in NJ, he put him on a daily regimen of I believe it was a steroid(progesterone I think) and after a few hours he was not in pain any more and could lift his head and walk again. He was kept on these for several years without any problems and then the vet weaned him off the meds slowly and substituted aspirin daily. Billy lived to be 11 with a total hemi vertibrae spine and could climb stairs without any problem either. Only if he did not get his meds or the aspirin later on did he have a problem.

Re: Chester has hemivertibraes in his back...
many bulldogs have hemis in their spine and many never have any issues. Just depends on where these hemis are located.
My friend Vicky Collins-Nattrass in England has done lots of studying on this subject. Here is a page she did for a puppy she had named Connor and a few others. You may want to email her also.

I pray Chester is able to live a long and comfortable life.

my experience..
my last bully would suddenly be frozen in place and seemed unable to walk. He was 4. No cookie, or high value treat would get him to move. X-rays showed some deformed vertebra and a suspected "intervertibral disc disease" He passed not long after, of unrelated causes but the episodes were becoming frequent. He was booked for an MRI of his spine before he passed. I will never know what the MRI may have shown.
Best of luck with your young boy. I am quite interested in this.
