Is cataracts in dogs a heritity issue.. My chinsee crested girl has the begining of cataracts in left eye..and she is only 1 1/2 yr old! I just wondered if this is something passed down from generation?

Had something (developed in puppyhood) that looked like a cataract. It was a fat deposit. If it gets too big, it can be removed surgically. In my dog's case, it never significantly impacted his eyesight, and we never had to have it removed.

however they can appear early in life on a diabetic animal, or one with other serious trauma and heredity can be a factor. There should be some good info on the internet such as www.marvistavet.com/cataracts
Are you sure it's a cataract?
Did the Vet diagnose a cataract? Sometimes an infection can cause a white film on the eye.

canine cataracts are normally a condition of aging
