After reading many articles on Bulldogs I have come across one question that many so called ethical breeders always say they put their dogs health first but yet I find that they breed their bitch to produce more than 3 litters in her lifetime. Most ethical breeders agree that 2-3 litters are the average. I'm finding that alot of big time show/breeders are just glorified puppymills. Only difference is they keep their bitches, dogs, and puppies in better living conditions than what we see on the news. There is a Ch Bitch that this breeder had since puppy finished her to her championship and kept her till she was about 3yrs old. While she had her she produced two beautifull litters for her. This breeder fell on financial hard times and ended up selling her and her daughter to another breeder. Once the new breeder got her she has bred the bitch twice herself. Get this...the two litters she produced was in the same year! Now how could this breeder be in it for the health and betterment of the breed and breed her bitch twice in the same year? You always hope for the best when you sell a puppy or dog. The buyer showed the $$$ and the desperate breeder sold her Ch. Bitch on full contract when she should have spayed her and gave her to a good home,,,,at least she would not have ended up in the wrong hands putting money in the puppymillers purse. I feal devastated for this bitch. Shame on the original owner for putting her beloved bitch in the wrong hands and double shame on the new owner for seeing nothing but $$$ signs.......
Isn't that the truth
Not all breeders who show are ethical. There are also many many breeders who have kennels and the dogs never see a day in a home. I just don't know how someone who says they love the breed so much can have 20 bulldogs in a kennel. Breaks my heart.
How can you
have 4 litters out of a bitch by the time she is 4. Are you breeding on the 2nd heat? How can you possibly show a bitch and raise 4 litters before she is 4. I'm guessing this is not your norm but your guideline.
Yes
I didn't mean it to come across quite as bad, but there are several breeders that show that do this. Maybe not most, but a good amount unfortunately.
Be careful not to generalize
"A lot of show breeders that show are nothing much more than puppy mills as well. And that's just the truth. Plenty of show breeders are exactly like puppy mills. "
In my experience with my peers that show, this is NOT the case. I am not naive and realize there are bad apples in every group. Bad cops, corrupt politicians. I understand that showing dogs and belonging to the BCA does not automatically make someone an ethical breeder. However, the majority are out there enjoying their hobby and taking great care to protect and better the breed.
I agree and truth to be told..
A lot of show breeders that show are nothing much more than puppy mills as well. And that's just the truth. Plenty of show breeders are exactly like puppy mills. Only difference is they maybe take a little better care of the dogs, but still always crated and bred for 4-6 litters. I see and hear it all the time. It is a shame. Especially some of these contracts going on, it doesn't matter if they are bred for confirmation or health, show breeders over-do it too and it's ridiculous.
sad but true :(
yep, pretty much. I do not disagree with breeders as long as they really are in it for the breed and not just to see $$ signs. When I first crossed pths with her she was a breeder that had three pet bitches and one pet male that she bred and sold puppies. She was not a show person at the time and neither is she now but as a perspective buyer you would think she was because the all the hype she has about her Ch girls that she did nothing to help get them there. But since she aquired the already Ch Bitch and her daughter that had 6 points on her she no longer has her other girls because they arent as valuable to her anymore. I believe in my heart that she uses the fact that the one bitch is a Champion that she gets more money from the puppies. She breeds her to Ch Males thus making the puppies worth more. And boy oh boy does her website boast it. I also know the person she got them from and it just makes me sick to my stomach. uggh!
agree, you typed what i was going to say

tammy how right you are.....
and its all the breeds not just bulldogs.....and just becasue you belong to the parent club does not mean a dam thing either....and so it gets frustrating becasue where do you go.... i made a mistake with wilson.....trusting to many things....
you get burned only once in life....
Ok.. so now with the rest of the story.. SHAME on the breeder wh
them to breed to this womans own stud dog!! However as I stated ETHICAL breeders DO NOT have these practices. Not all people who show are ethical.

Re: Breeding Bitches
My girls are never bred more than twice even though I've never gotten a big litter...and they live out their lives here in our home as part of our family.
that is very sad..
If you know this for a fact, you should out her/him.
I don't rescue animals because I want to feel better about myself, or morally superior to anyone. The best part of my life with animals is the humility they teach and the humanity the foster.

the other difference you missed with differences is that
ethical breeders choose their breedings carefully.. paying careful attention to health, temperament, and conformation.. this is a far cry from a puppy mill. I will agree that this is not always the case but is the norm.

first Mike.. do you know for certain this bitch was sold to
a puppy mill? Second there are reasons that people do back to back breedings.. one is for medical reasons called pyometra. With this the bitch must be spayed or bred each time she comes in heat or she becomes very ill and many times this is fatal. The only other option is to spay. Many times breeders will choose to spay but if this is a Ch. bitch that is otherwise healthy and an important part of the breeders program they choose to breed each time the bitch comes in heat. Now with that said if the bitch has a large litter many will choose to spay after that because breeding back to back with large litters is not usually a wise choice.. This comes to the second reason people breed back to back. If a bitch has only one or two puppies and is healthy there is absolutely no reason to not breed back. Breeders will vary on opionion as to how many litters is safe for their bitches... I personally do not breed mine more than four times and ONLY if the bitch is extremely healthy and I would normally choose not to breed my girls after the age of 4. Now if the bitch was sold to a puppy mill SHAME on the breeder!!!!!!!!!!!!
