took me a bit to refind my informatio....when making my batches i always use a whole chicken....for recreation bones i use only lamb and pig.....
hope this helps.....
you can....
mix and match as much as you want....since 80% is your protein and only 10%organ and 10% bone.... my boys at 52 and 56 lbs get 1 to 1 1/2 lb of raw a day....i spilt that meal in two...but in the afternoon they will get some beef heart, some liver, or tripe ...(takes care of organ) then of course they have their pig feet they share one together....a lamb leg....(takes care of bone)
chicken is my main protein like you it is the least expensive....since i buy 50 to 80 lbs a months i can get it for 60 cents a lb.... i only do beef when i find it on sale at the grocery,,,,or when my brother and i buy a full cow and split it in half....since i dont fuss with special cuts...i get a 1/2 cow for with butchering 1.20$ a lb....that will last a year (i use it for myself also)....
also look for co ops....they buy in bulk and the price is reduced....
i have three friends and were going to start raising rabbits....their are alot of ways to reduce grocery store prices....
even with primal...if you could find three or four other people to buy with you...your price would be less...remember your paying a marked up price...and you need only to buy a certain amt to buy direct....
This is AWESOME! and a few questions........
we are ready to start making Audreys' food now, at least to give in addition to the frozen. It costs $150 a month to feed the Primal, and while I really LOVE the results, we have got to find a way to make it cheaper. I do have a few questions, if you don't mind?
Does it matter if you mix up the meat sources, like chicken for the meat and cow for the organs? Or is it better to stick with one animal at a time?
If your only choice was grocery store meat, would you still make your own raw?
We are in poultry farm country, I know how they raise and feed their birds, and we are not going to get many choices for meat sources.
thanks so much for you help!

when she first came home
i grind my bird bones.....
many people dont they just feed the whole bird.am to old fashioned so i grind any bird bones my personal choice (chicken,pheasant)....they get whole lamb rib bones and crunch them up nicely....they also get whole pig feet with the bone and tendons and thats keeps their teeth very clean...and they get a good amt of their bone from that....
i feed mostly chicken breast without bone...and just add a couple of lamb ribs to get my bone content....
if they poop out a white bowel their is to much bone...and the digestive system is going to slow...so i will give more meat the next meal...thats how i gage my bone requirement....
for my omega needs i give cod liver tabs....
have lots of fun....raw is the best...
Re: brandon here is... % bone in chicken for raw feeding
This is awesome ... Thank you so much for tracking this down.
Do you grind the meat and bone, or feed the whole chicken pieces. It sounds like feeding intact bones is better for their teeth, but I'm having trouble getting over the unsightly image of my pup gnawing on a chicken carcass. It also seems like it would be easier to feed the appropriate portions if everything is ground. Any other thoughts or advice would be great!
Thanks again!
