Audrey's face is a MESS

it's only been a week on no Angel's Eyes, and I just completed the switch to the new food yesterday. Her face is already brown! I don't know if I can stand looking at her face turn brown for weeks waiting to see if the food works! Her right eye is watering like crazy too.

Even that very slight roll in will cuase those tiny little lashe

and that may very well be the problem. Sophie's lower right eyelid has a barely discernable roll and it causes her no end of annoyance! She gets dark tear stains on that side from time to time and it is almost always because there is a wee tiny eyelash rubbing somewhere. I can't even always see them!!!

Most likely it is not the yogurt.

I have not heard of yogurt causing allergies before.

TOTW may not stop the allergies.

I used it with my girl and she didn't get better. I switched her to Natural Balance Sweet Potato and Fish and she is fine now.

Tear stains may be from the water she drinks as well as the food. Try using filtered or bottled water for a while.

Narrow or crimped tear ducts

...may simply not drain well enough. This can happen with a smooshed face. If this is the case, switching foods may reduce but never eliminate tear staining. You may need to accept tear staining ...or use Angel Eyes or it's (cheaper) active ingredient (Tylan).

yes the vet checks her eyes very carefully

every time we go. She just hurt her neck, then was spayed in the past 2 weeks, so she's been examined carefully. It's not an eyelash. Her right lower eyelid does roll in a bit, which is why he checks it closely every time we go, but it's really very minimal and so far he says not bad enough to do anything about it.

it's so hard to try to figure out what is causing it!

because she gets such a variety of things on a regular basis. So I decided to eliminate one thing at a time, to see if that's what it is. She gets yogurt daily also, but I don't want to stop yogurt and grains at the same time, because then how will I know which one it is?

I will try that!

it's horrible to see her face turn brown again. sad.gif

we just switched her to TOTW salmon

and are eliminating grains from her diet to see if it's grains making her face itch and stain.

eyes

Just wondering b/c you said her right eye is tearing more... have you had her eyes checked for distichia? That can make her eyes water too causing some tear staining.

well so far I have NOT seen any proof of long term bad effects

and my vet isn't really concerned about it either. I guess Ijust get a guilt complex because it is an antibiotic. It works SO good though!

Effects

If all else fails, it's worth trying.

It prevents the chemical reaction that causes the brown color. Such a VERY small dose (a pinch in their food)is needed to make a difference. Some people will discourage you from using it, many of them with no personal experience and confusing it with tetracyline. My bulldog vet with 30 yrs of experience advised me that long term studies have been done and that it is safe, even for young dogs. Who do you want to believe? I have seen great results on my white Frenchie and am cutting back on how often I give it.

well since we have fish we have to be aware of that stuff

it's basically chlorine bound with ammonia. They used to use plain chlorine, and she still had stains and a smelly face, so I don't know if it's that or not.

In don't know about those:-)

But it may be a problem.....try filtering the water with a Brita filter or similar. Or get bottled water. it might help some:-)

I understand about the eye watering

and she is ROUGH when she plays so I'm sure she causes the lashes to rub more, but the stains and smell definitely went away with the Angel's Eyes. I am hoping changing food will stop the stain and smell for good.

that's why I didn't eliminate it too. nm

our water is treated with chloramines

so I wonder if that's causing a problem.

are there long term effects of using tylan/tylosin?

because it really does work. Gets rid of the ugly stain and the smell too. My vet told me it's not an antibiotic frequently used on dogs so he wasn't concerned about building a tolerance to it, but it just worries me to keep her on something like that long term. It's not used every day after 6 months, it's used 2 times a week.

kibby5's picture

kibby had that issue

kibby(white 5yearold girl) has that issue when i went grain free and fed her natural balance potato and duck... it made her yeasty so then she started getting more face/tear issues from that.. luckily i had a small bag, so i figured that just as long as its not making her sick (just making her ugly for while), might as well finish out the bag so i know for sure whether or not it was caused by the food. she had an ear infection prior and then a uti after... Not that you could ever know for sure, but I didnt want to do too many more changes to her routine because I figured then I will never know what is really causing what to happen.

Like was she allergic to the food, or the medication, or something surrounding her (detergents, grass?), or is it just because its something new an she hasn't adjusted to it yet?

anyways, once she was finished with the bag , I slowly switched her to natures variety chicken/tapioca, then her poo was too soft, finished that bag, switched her natural instict salmon/brown rice....I think with the small bag, it will last about a 6 weeks -including introducing her to another food.

throughout this her tear stains and everything started to clear, but I still cleaned when necessary, and not with any new chemicals.

now i am happy to say that she is good right now- good hard poo, not yeasty, tears are minimal, skin/folds look stable, no idcs, ears look good, no booty issues... but knock on wood, i'm sure something else will come up next week!

You can treat it topically

Just swipe with peroxide on a cotton ball (don't get it in the eye) and smear some diaper rash ointment on it with a Qtip. Do it daily, for now.
If the staining is really bad, you can treat with the milk of mag/peroxide/corn starch mixture. happy.gif

Kathy Chester Newman and Jessa's picture

The same thing happened to Chester when...

we switched his food to a low calorie Hills food. We've got him back on his old food plus green beans but I'm still clearing up a tail infection and tear stains. What are you feeding her?
