Arthritis question

The vet is suspecting a strained or torn ACL on my PollyAnna's back hind knee. She also has some swelling also and a red area on the inside of this leg. It looks like she might also have arthritis setting in. She has been licking this area excessively. Do you all think that it is just her way of soothing the pain by licking it? She is on Prevacox for pain and lameness and will be getting an X-Ray after Christmas. What will they be looking for on the X-Ray because I know muscle does not show up on them.

Poor Polly!

I have no idea about the x-rays, but my 12 year old lab mix has really bad arthritis in her back knees. I just posted on the main forum under supplements, because I found somethng that helped her tremendously. She wasn't licking her knee, but was licking her feet. She doesn't really do that much anymore.

What an x-ray might show...

if its clear enough (technique and equipment are good) would be some signs of arthritis in the joint area, whether the kneecap is in position, whether or not there are any small chips or fragments in the joint (I have a small bone fragment in my knee for past 5yrs following surgery but it hasn't moved so we just "watch it") and you're right that muscle and ligaments don't show on x-ray but in combination with exam, hopefully the vet can give you a clearer understanding of why she's favoring that knee/leg. If you decide to do some cool compresses, don't need more than 5mins once or twice a day, which may help reduce swelling from a recent injury.

I also would use Adequan.

It is a very good med.

I reccomend Adequan for arthritis

It is also good for soft tissue injuries.

Do you have her on Glucosamine/Chondroitin?

Onslow tore his CCL slightly last year. The glucosamine really helps!

It sounds like she's in pain if she's licking. =( Did they advise you to give her aspirin at all?

Naughty or Nice? NAUGHTY!
