Are tear stains ALWAYS food related?

Audreys tear stains and gooky nose rope are making me crazy! I read the info on it, (and BDW's tear stain page is wonderful), but I still end up not 100% certain WHY her face is a mess. I understand there is natural bacteria on a dogs' skin, and when that bacteria meets the constant moisture from running eyes it changes the color to brown. Makes sense that an antibiotic would clear it up, but does the antibiotic kill ALL bacteria at the same time? I know beneficial bacteria are important, so I'm not comfortable killing off all the bacteria on her skin to stop the stains.

So is it something in her diet that is causing a certain kind of bacteria? Is it something her diet is lacking?

The places that stay wet on her face don't smell bad anymore. But under her nose rope it is just continuous gook. Is it because she is more wrinkly now? I can see 2 very distinct wrinkles at the edges of her nose that are way more prominent now. Her nose also frequently runs, and that wrinkle in the corner prevents it from running away from her rope, and seems to direct it right under her rope.

She is getting a 500 mg vit c tablet once a day
she uses all stainless steel bowls
she drinks bottled water
her food has apple cider vinegar in it
her food has very limited ingredients, mostly meat and veggies/fruit (apples & cranberries)

should I just figure that it's her facial structure causing the wetness and this is just how it's going to be? Her eye that is stained the worse is VERY WRINKLED, especially in the corner/tear duct area. It runs all the time. Should I be more concerned at this point about getting her eyes to stop running? And HOW on earth would I accomplish that?

sorry if this topic has been discussed over and over, the search is frustrating because it's very hard to read posts in order, and I still haev questions anyways.

May I ask

why each dog eats different? Interesting that you said you might be anal about wiping their faces after eating. With their short snouts maybe that is really helping since food gets awfully close to their folds when they eat if not touching. You are so lucky it seems an ever ending battle sometimes.

5 dogs, no stains..

and I don't have a clue why other than the fact that I can't stand tear stains, so I am always wiping faces. Every time they eat I wipe faces and folds.

When I first got Belle she had terrible brown stains. Her stains went away very gradually after she was here for awhile. Lately she has been getting crusty nose folds. Vet says it's fungus. No stains, but I think maybe her urine crystal meds are contributing to irritation.

Maybe I'm just anal about wiping faces or maybe it's the food. I feed Belle Canidae Lamb and Rice. Bent and Ted eat NB Duck. Bentley eats Prairie Lamb and Oatmeal. Roxy eats Hill's Prescription i/d canned. (she has irritable bowels and seems to do really well on that food.)

I clean ears once a week. Nobody has any ear buildup. Teddy's feet bother him. He's allergic to walking outside!

i wish i knew

I've had a similar problem with my 14 month old Bella. Seems to have started at around one year. Tried all kinds of food, took her to a eye doc to have her checked and tests ran etc. And can't figure it out. Right at the corner of her eye the fur is gone it appears now but her eyes don't water much and her nose area is red, gets redder as she plays.

It's not a staph etc

Now I clean it mulitiple times a day and it doesn't seem to get better.

At this point I feel this is how her face will be, beautiful but a little red in spots. She is black so its harder to see, but still bothers me - hopefully not her.

Hopefully you have better luck

Britta 2 pics

Unless it's something else, the Britta seems to work on my dogs tear stains. All their water, drinking, on food, even to wash the wrinkles themselves. I use 2 different foods on the pups right now, and the only other things they ever get is Brother, Diamond puppy chow, and Frozen BilJak with small amount of Prozyme, and Buddy, Natural Balance Fish and Pot, and BilJak, with some Diatomeasous earth each day for both. I can see the difference, and I'd say it's the rust in our Indiana water. As ya can see stains better in the 2nd pic. It was taken Sunday the 24th, so it's not fast . I also use stainless bowls and bleach them everyday.

What about something in the house?

has she been allergy tested? Someone on another forum had a bully with terrible allergies... when she got him tested it turned out he was allergic to wool and they had wool blankets all around the house and even one in the dogs bed..

It could be anything, laundry detergent, soap, different fabrics, chemicals you clean with... I duno just throwing out some ideas! Oh Mold is a big one too, we have a damp basement and I think that adds to Cash's allergies in the humid months.

that was interesting but

I just can't believe that Audrey has an ongoing low grade systemic infection. The tylan did work, but as soon as we stopped it the stains came back.

I think I will ask the vet to really check her eyelashes

and just her eyes overall. I can't see any eyelash problems, but maybe the vet will be able to see something.

I appreciate your 2 cents!

maybe Audrey is allergic to something in the house since her eyes run year round. Her nose seems to run a lot too.

Audrey's are definitely year round :-(

I am worried about her eye also. The vet did check it, but she really hasn't been since her spay, and for that visit he wasn't looking at her eyes. I am really starting to wonder if Audrey's aren't food related either.

What I have noticed about tear stains, etc.

Gus's face is more wrinkled than Maude's and his nose rope is heavier/bigger. He collects more gunk in his wrinkles and rope. They both eat Blue Buffalo, usually the whitefish and sweet potato formula. Sounds as if Audrey is eating and drinking very healthily. Are her eyelashes okay on the eye that runs more? I've not had to deal with the ingrown eyelash issue with Maude or Gus.

Eyes running/tearing

I don't know the answers to all your questions but with Onslow, his runny eyes and tearing are seasonal due to allergies. (Just like his momma). I have an air filter in the house but there's not much to do about the allergens outside - I just wipe his face when I see it running and try to wipe his feet etc when he comes in, in the spring/fall. Just thought I'd add my 2 cents. LOL

With Cash...

This was his first full change of seasons. As a puppy he didn't have any stains (maybe a tiny bit but nothing that bothered me) He went through his first winter (he was born in June) and then as soon as spring hit he got nasty brown/red staining. I thought it was food and changed everything, tried ACV, and then TUMS... Nothing worked, then winter rolled around again and he's gorgeous white. His wrinkles are still a little wet, but no staining. He's back on his regular food that he was on since he was born. So - I guess I'll wait and see if they come back in the spring again... For Cash, its not food.

It's possible that she has something bothering the more teary eye... distachea or entropian are possible. Where she's more wrinkly on that side maybe the corner of her lid is turning in a little and causing irritation?
