are idc's related to stress?

Dear all,

Kibby went to the vet on Monday to have her nails trimmed.. then the next day she developed an idc. The idc has come and gone now maybe about 3 times since Jan, each time , in the same place and it will go away within a week or so, without any special treatment, just some cleaning. It never gets oozy or anything, just swollen.

This time, her IDC is completely gone already. I also remember her last one came, right after we took her to the vet for a follow up on her ear infections.

I double checked to make sure that there is no foreign object.. i cant feel anything in there.

so 2 questions :
1. do you think its related to stress? she is a little scared at the vet, but still willing to let them handle her.

2. or do you think the reoccurrence is because if some underlying problem, like her ear infection is not totally cleared?
or she is still eating or recently ate something that she is allergic too?
or do you think there is something in there, and i better take her to the vet to have them search for it? THANKS!

thanks, i will try that

that is a good idea, i'll do this when she is sleepy so she won't care!... one thing i did notice was that she does have an abnormally large pad underneath that toe area... the main bottom of the pad area is black, and then side of the pad is meatier then the other pads and pinkish and it does get more swollen red whenever she has idc issues. i'll try to finally learn how to upload some pictures so you can see.

her idc is completely gone now, so should i still do a soak before i examine? thanks!

thanks, i wasn't sure...

thanks for all of your information...you are very very knowledgeable! are you a vet?

i am a new bully owner so all of these health issues are new to me. Kibby had a foxtail lodged stuck in the web of her toes before and I thought it was just an idc, until it turned bright red, then we saw a little white spot on the top, picked at it because we thought we should drain the pus or something, then it turned out to be the head of a foxtail, and luckily we were able to pull it out... so amazing, i never had a dog with webbed feet!

thats why i thought maybe she got another foreign object stuck in there thats not making its way out or something!

hmmmmm.. maybe its the treats on the counter we give her at the vet...her idc literally comes the next day ... i will experiment again the next time we go to the vet! Her ears have been clean lately ( I check and clean every 3-5 days)... I wonder what else could be wrong?

thanks again for helping me relieve my ongoing bully health stress!

If you suspect it may be some localized irritation on the pad of her foot, try soaking the foot (5-10mins) in an Epsom Salts solution which should soften the skin and help loosen any debris...then get the dog to lie down so you can gently dry between the toes with a soft cloth all the while feeling around with your fingertips for any sand/dirt/stones/whatever. I know some dogs are ultra-sensitive about having their paws handled (perhaps scared about toenail trimming) but if you can gently handle her, condition her to allowing your fingers around her paws, that will help you and her in so many ways in the future. Talk softly, using praise, and no forcing. Shouldn't need treats for this, since it isn't asking anything "too difficult" IMHO> happy.gif

I doubt if its "something in there" as that's too coincidental.

I suppose it could be related to stress but the more logical explanation (and what relates to those of my dogs who have had IDC's come and go) is that its allergy-related or due to some other low-grade infection in the system.

re soak

There's nothing very 'medicinal' about the Epsom Salts soaking, as it should provide some relief from sore, tired, slightly swollen feet (human and animal) and it will give you an opportunity to be sure the area between the toes is clean, so even if her IDC has gone now, it might be a good thing to examine her food closely when its NOT sore, to have a comparison in your mind when it IS. happy.gif
