anyone familiar with geneflora for pets.......

my cooper has been on it for a week now & i don't notice any difference. some of the benefits are supposed to be improved digestion & control gas, but it seems his gas is still terrible & his stool is still a little soft. my question is this- does it take awhile to take effect? or should i be seeing some improvement already? i'm giving him the double dose for the first 2 weeks as suggested, so i'm not sure what else to do. anyone have experience with this product?

Cooper/Red eyes

Totally off the original topic...but glad to hear that the redder eyes at night thing isn't just in my mind. I'll definitely ask the vet about that tomorrow. Tuffy's eyes seemed pretty normal today and then he had his first session with a trainer and his eyes were very bloodshot. Wonder if stress has anything to do with it. I posted some recent pictures of him on my orginal post surgery cherry eye thread so you can see what I mean... Keep posting pix of Cooper on the board. He's so adorable.

it seems like cooper's

get alot redder at night, too. see what your vet says about it. unfortunately, my vet isn't really bully experienced. i live in a small town & there aren't very many bullies around. when i took him to the specialist, i had to drive almost 2 hours. he's worth it though! i'm sure your little guy will fill out just fine. cooper is actually just starting to get the "bully" look. they look a little awkward for a period & then they fill out- & some get the lovely teeth =)

Yes, Tuffy is my first Bullie baby!!

My husband is jealous of all the time I devote to McTuffster!! But I have three human babies as well and they all adore Tuffy. Speaking of eyes, I wonder if red-rimmed eyes is just a trait of bulldogs? The post-snipping picture makes his eyes look a bit whiter than they really are. It seems at night his eyes become more bloodshot...I wonder if it's from fatigue. He's going for his followup appointment on Tuesday so we'll see what the doctor says.

I hope my Tuffy grows up to be as handsome and burly as your Cooper. He's 15 weeks and about 23 lbs and has a hearty appetite so hopefully he'll continue to fill out!

Stay in touch regarding the food, geneflora etc.!

thanks!

he's 13 months & weighs about 53 lbs right now. i think he's gained a little in the last month or so. i think tuffy looks a little lighter than cooper too. his eyes look so awesome! i can't believe they look so good, so soon after the procedure! cooper had one of his eyes done before i got him & it still looks red sometimes. i'm not sure if it's because his eyes are so droopy (you can easily see his inner eyelid most of the time, unless he's looking up),or if the vet didn't do a good job. i had him flown from georgia to wisconsin so i don't personally know the vet who did it. i took him to an eye specialist after i got him & he said everything looked good, so i guess he's ok. his other eye does "pop" out a cherry eye every once in a while, but i can massage it back in with no problem. i'm hoping it won't get worse. i'm still not sure if i notice any effects from the geneflora yet. maybe a little less gas-sometimes =) (he's terrible!) his poop is still not as firm as i would like it to be, though. all we can do is keep trying =) i give cooper fish oil pills, also. i wonder if that's part of his problem? i don't want to stop because he has the softest, thickest coat! he also had demodex & i want to make sure his hair grows back healthy. it's never ending with bully's, but you gotta love em! is tuffy your first?

Cooper is one handsome dude!

He is stunning. And looks like a good size too. How old is he and how much is his current weight? And I love his overbite!! Despite his food issues it doesn't appear that weight is a problem!! Pearl is a real beauty as well!

I think Cooper has similar coloring and markings of my Tuffy--although I think Cooper is a deeper red and my guy is only 4 months old. See below.

By the way I've been on the geneflora for a few days and no change right now! But I think the fish oil supplements are making his loose stool even worse. Arrr..does this ever end!!

yes, i use a regular

1 cup measuring scoop. i give him 2 cups in the am & 1 1/2 in the pm. he's 13 months old & about 53 lbs. maybe i'll try cutting back 1/4 cup & see if it helps. i just hate it when he acts like he's starving =( my other 2 never did that. i could free feed them & they would just eat when they were hungry. i swear this guy would eat until he passed out! thanks for the advise!

I am looking to save some money too

$150 a month for one dog is a lot of money! Now that we did the food trial and figured out she is allergic to grains, and added back different proteins and know she tolerates them well, we will start making our own. From what I have been reading, it seems like a VERY common thing for dogs to have a time limit for tolerance of any single kind of kibble. Mixing things up, giving a variety of flavors and brands seems like it would be a good thing, as long as you know what ingredients your dog can and can not have.

Do you use prozyme in addition to a probiotic?

Also how much do you give? If the geneflora doesn't work I might give that a shot!

Measure

Do you measure the dogs food? I know that's pretty basic, but that's where I'd start. I give my pups prozyme, for stool sampling [tasting] . Seems to be working, and stools are a little more formed and harder.

Thanks!

Those pics were from a while ago. He looks a lot different now. I'll post new pictures after his cherry eye is gone. He's kind of scary looking right now!! I'd love to see pics of your bully!

I share your pain!

Having a dog with a healthy digestive track is definitely not too much to ask for. I'm equally frustrated that the C. Natural food that's been so highly touted doesn't seem to be working for my pup. I will give the probiotic a shot but at least I've been forewarned it's not a miracle cure. If you find a solution that works for you...please share it. I'm all ears!

i'm still not set on one

food- hopefully the one he's on now will be it. i wish i could feed raw like you do, but i have 2 dogs (& a 2 legger) & can't afford it. (i don't know who costs more lol) i read about the different things the geneflora is supposed to help with & it mentioned gas & soft stool. the main thing is probably immune system & overall health which is great too, but i'm looking for a miracle here lol =) thanks for the reply!

becky's picture

i forgot to add...

that tuffy is sooooo darn cute! i wanna smooch him up =)

becky's picture

sorry! didn't mean to

discourage you, but i just wasn't sure how quickly it's supposed to work. i am giving him the double dose- it's been a week, so i'll do it for 1 more week & then go to the regular dosage. i tried totw salmon & he still had super runny poop after about 3 months, so apparently that's not the right food for him. right now i have him on premium edge salmon, potatoes, & veg. it's not a really common food, but the ingredients seem good & i don't have alot to choose from because i live in a small town. he's only been on it for almost 2 months now, so i'm still not sure if it's the right food for him. i'm hoping! the food thing drives me crazy! i don't know if he has any allergies yet, but for now i would like less gas (or none!) & firm poop! is that too much to ask for?? lol

I was under the impression that it

helped them absorb nutrients better and keep healthy bacteria in their intestines. You wouldn't really notice dramatic physical changes unless your dog had issues to start with. For example, my old dogs have arthritis and just were sleepy and sluggish. We started with the probiotics and a grain free diet, and they were less stiff and much more active and happy. I think you would look for their overall health, coat, immunity, joint health, etc, to stay in top condition as a sign that it was working. For the gas, I would think that if the food agrees with them it won't cause excess gas? Audrey had TERRIBLE gas when we first got her, we switched her food and she has never had bad, or any worse than any animal, gas since then.

Becky...we're in the same boat!

Hi Becky,

You aren't instilling much confidence in me. I'm also planning to try Geneflora to control the soft stools. Did you use double the dose as the container suggests for the first two weeks. If this doesn't work I may try grain free and you may want to consider that as well. May I ask what food you are using now? I'm on C. Natural lamb and rice and my pup has soft stools. Pumpkin also made it worse for my dog!!

Annie...what didn't you like about Geneflora?

Hi Annie,

I actually just got my geneflora (haven't opened it yet) and am curious about why you started using it and what you didn't like about it? Did you find one that you liked better?

Thanks!

Tuffy's Mama

becky's picture

yogurt didn't seem to do

anything for him. i also tried pumpkin for the soft stool- actually made it worse. i've never tried the capsules, though. i'll have to compare cost. thanks so much for your response =)

becky's picture

this is my first

container & if nothing changes, i won't be wasting my money anymore either. thanks for the reply =)

What about

using some yogurt or getting some probiotics capsules. I've used that with my dogs and we have almost no problems with gas. Not sure what Geneflora costs, but this might be an alternative and accomplish what that product is supposed to do at a lower cost.

My vet recommended it for my Cocker....

and I used it up and never bought it again. I did not care for it and thought it was a waste of money.
