So I am thinking of having Josie allergy tested. I would like to know others who have had tests and if you were satisfied with results, are some tests better than others, are there others?? etc... Josie has some skin issues that antibiotics don't see to help, and the food elimination/changes seems like a crap shoot at times. She is eating NB SP & Venison (w/yogurt and green beans)and does well with NO gas and good poops. Yes i said no gas, hallelujah!! tee hee Any experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, T & J
exactly
the test for food is done with blood sample, the environmental allergy test is done with a biopsy. i will post more when i discuss with my vet. T & J

Test Options
I spoke with a vet tech yesterday a my vets office. she advised me that there is an allergy test just for food, (approx $200.00) and then an all inclusive test of food and environm, ent ($316.00) and then an oral med taken which defies all allergies ($102.00) the med is supposed to cure all allergy issues and must be taken for the life of the bully. I made an appt to see my vet so she can look at Josie and advise which would be the most beneficial for her treatment. very ineresting. T & J.

do they scrape the skin?
I would love to get my rescues tested for allergies. They have been licking paws, scratching, ear infections galore since i got them.. i am tired of switching foods all the time as well... my old vet told me that the allergy testing wouldn't tell me any conclusive results and that it was a waste... i will ask my new vet about these tests... thanks for the info.. please update after you get it done and good luck.

allergy testing
If you are seriously considering doing allergy testing I would highly recommend taking your dogs to an animal dermatologist. There are a couple of ways that they can test, one is through a blood test and one is they take skin samples. When I did it on my male, my dermatologist did the blood tests. I disagree that the tests are inconclusive. In our case, his was environmental, meaning, grasses, pollens, certain trees, which makes it harder to treat then if it is a food related allergy. But it can be done. My dog was proof. A dermatologist will be able to prescribe the correct antibiotics to help treat those allergies. And also help treat ear infections. If you have not done so, you may want to at least go for a consult with a derm. to find out your options.

Re: Any disapointments.........allergy testing
I too had the allergy testing done and discovered it was not food but environmental. My dog was on allergy shots his entire life. At one point I stopped them to see if they were really working and he had major skin issues, so back on the shots we went. Occasionally he still needed a bout of antibiotics depending on the season but over all the majority of time his skin and coat were beautiful. It is an expense but in my opinion it was worth the money having him comfortable. Being that it was environmental, certain times of the year were worse then others. If I had to do it again, I would.

allergy testing
I had the Spectrum test performed. $295. It was helpful to find out my boy was allergic to flaxseed, barley, wheat, soy and venison. He is also allergic to a numerous amount of of grasses, trees, plants, molds etc. I feed him a grain free food. His ear infections have stopped occuring, but he still has bouts of excessive licking that I curb with antihistamines from time to time.

I had the testing done..
Had the VARL allergy testing done it was about 199 bucks. The reason I did this was so that I wasn't going to have to try food for 6-8 weeks and then if that didn't work try a different food. The testing told me everything and I started food and allergy meds and don't really have problems anymore.
