Hi everyone..I have been on this site over the years but have never posted ..shy I guess..I have a 12 year old female English Bulldog,(had her since 8 weeks old) Daisy with a large tumour on her outer ft foot pad, probably about 1 inch in diameter, raw with some necrotic like black superficial areas starting on it. Due to her age and site of the tumour we (vet and myself) have decided it would be very risky to even consider surgery..she is still eating (not as much as usual), drinking and wanting to go for car rides. We are putting her through a course of antibiotic just to see if we can reduce any infection that many be there prophalactily..after 10 days not too much difference..I am soaking the foot in warm h20 and peroxide a couple times a day for a few minutes, drying it and swabbing with betadine solution which does help to control the odour. The tumour is getting larger and is raw with yellowish serous like drainage she is getting other tumour like areas on the bottom of her foot as well ..it is so hard to keep a dressing due to the area I have tried everything to cover the dressing from socks, gauze wrap to ankle braces, attached velcro to top of socks and a sweater I have for her.. problem is that the tape regardless of where I put it always lands in the crease of the leg and top/side of the foot which causes a pressure area because of the way she walks.I am giving her metacam for pain daily but I noticed the last couple of days she is getting more restless when she is lying down not able to get her foot/leg in a comfortable position..Taking her back to the vet tomorrow..I would appreciate any suggestions..I sure Love my dog and want to do what is best for her. thankyou so much!
Thankyou everyone
I am absolutely humbled by everyones reponses..thankyou so much..I took Daisy to the vet this am and the tumour on her foot is too extensive to be excised..the only option would be to do an amputation at this time which is out of the question due to her age.., and finally this morning I wrapped it with another type of wrap and it is staying in place, however I have to wait a couple of hours to see if it still is intact.
Thankyou Onslowsmom for the offer of the special tape, I will keep it in mind if my dressing does not work..by the way I really enjoy reading your dog tales...they are so humourous.
I sure Love my Daisy..she has brought so much Joy to our household..my children and grandchildren adore her..a gentle dog..I am so very sad today knowing that very soon I will have to make the decision that I have read many others have made on the site over the years and found myself thinking , "Boy I'm glad it's not me!"
For the next week or so I am going to make her comfortable with her pain meds, give her all of my attention along with McDonald's, Tim Horton's donuts, car rides everyday(she loves them! ).. all of her favourite things, and when things look like they are more uncomfortable for her. it will be time..and I know that as much as I don't want too... I will know it. Once again Thankyou so much. Mary
Hi there.
I've never dealth with those issues but I work for a Home Health Care Company and had a suggestion.
My company sell a sports tape that sticks to itself and requires no tape. I could send you a roll of it for free if you think it might help Daisy to be more comfortable.
Email me if you're interested. Best wishes to Daisy.

Kathy's advice sounds like it might be worth a try..
I have never dealt with a tumor in any of my dogs but one of my horses got a tumor on her eyelid when she was about 25 which for a horse is quite old. We didn't want to put her down because other than this eyelid tumor she was healthy. So the vet simply sedated her, and then numbed the eyelid and cut the tumor off. We got 2 more years of life outta her very health and happy. The tumor did eventually come back and we chose euthanize because it metastasized into her eye and then brain and we didn't want her to suffer. But it sounds like it might be wortth a shot..
Local anaestetic
My Bulldogvet uses local anaestetic whenever possible. I believe he does even C-sections with a local anaestetic.
One of my old boys had a fatlump removed under local and Zorro had his piehole (sorry, don't know the polite name for it) enlarged under local anaestetic. Basically the dog comes in, gets a calming injection, lies on the table, while held by his owner. Injection in the area that needs the painkiller, green cloth around the area, the vet does what he has to do, and a counterinjection for the calmingmedication. Zorro was on his feet in moments......
If necessary some antibiotics and that is it. I had to bring Zorro in sober (no food since 11 the night before) so general anaestic could be used if necessary. Needless to say that I suffered more that Zorro!
It might be necessary to find a vet that is willing to do the procedure under local, but I think that even I would go for it......
Good luck,
Ineke
Ket/Val is the traditional injectible anesthetic
and given in light dose, it should be okay but there are some of the same risks as with using inhalant+Isoflurene, except that the ket/val is cheaper and the dog doesn't need to be sedated or masked-down so it might not be a frightening for her during induction. Unless you know she is having a heart/circulatory problem or moderate-stage liver disease, I would go ahead and have the dog sedated at least, and have the wound thoroughly examined, possibly removed or at least opened and cleaned out...sounds like if its draining that soaking might actually be spreading the infection? Antibiotics should be given if its opened (cleaning or removal)anyway and if you give probiotics at the same time, it will ease any digestive upset she might experience from the medication. I certainly understand your reluctance to have your dog put under, however an increasing tumor that is discharging must be addressed...sounds like it is sapping her overall strength/overtaxing her immune system. Best wishes to your bullie.
When our girl Oreo had some tumors...
around her inverted tail, our vet used a sedative (NOT ACE), and a local anesthetic to remove them. We didn't want to use a general anesthetic because of her age, she was 9 at the time. I believe they used valium/ketamine to relax her and then injected a local at the site. Hope they can figure something out for your poor girl.

I'm sorry
I can't give much advice and I know how hard this is for you and your girl. I would stop using peroxide. Peroxide should only be used once on a wound to clean it. After that I believe it inhibits healing by keeping things "stirred up".
Also, a second opinion might be considered. Good luck and please keep us posted on your sweet girl.
