another hemotoma question...this time the about pred.

Bella is on predisone for her hemotoma.
it is working good. she has been on 4 pills a day for 4 days now.. the swelling in the ear is way way down..but not gone completely.
tomorrow the pred is cut back to 2 pills a days for a few days.
does the pred stay in the system for a bit yet.
kinda worried about cutting the pred back when it seems to be working
she is on them 16 days before they are totally out of her system

I just felt a few more days at 4 pills a day would totally clear out the hemotoma. I stopped at the vet today and they feel she should be cut down on them NOW and see what happens.

HOW long does the pred stay in the system for??

ear surgery

my Lab brother had surgery for a full ear hematoma. She did a criss-cross type.

the oral pred stops the production

or cortizol in the body. So when taking high doses you have to taper off or the body is left w/o any pred in the system and can have major complications. It takes about 1 day w/o the meds to start getting problems.

The ear prob was resolving on its own w/o the pred and will continue to get better.

my vet told the surgery is very involved....

but they are the first one to suggest during it...
I think that the pred is the way to go
with no surgery
she seems to be healing fine

the vet told me that there are a zillion stitches in the ears and the recovery is long for the surgery.

I would rather put up with the side effects of the pred. Bella had a couple of accidents on the floor with the meds today but..I can handle that.

My Vet is bummed because the sugery isn't necessary anymore

He told me it's a neat surgery that he likes to perform.

yea I wander about that too...

well she has been on 2 in the morning and 2 at night for the last four days
starting tomorrow...she is on 4 days of 2 in the morning only and then it goes to one a day and then to every other day then half tabs every other day and finally off them.

she goes back for recheck on Monday again to see the vet.
but at least it is working..
and healing..just was not sure about cutting back the meds. the vet is really great here...gotta have some faith..lol although not always easy to do.

this is the FIRST TIME this vet has used pred for this. they usually do the draining thing, but 90 plus time right into surgery. I am not in favour of surgery whatsoever and since the hemotoma is small we opted for the pred and see how it goes..it working and that is a good thing

thanks for your input

It does stay in your system for a few days

I can't remember the dose, but it was either 5mg or 10mg a day for Morgan when she had her hematomas. I never cut the dosage down and she stayed on the pred until the hematoma was gone.
