Hi All
Just wondering if expressing anal glads is something that is supposed to be done as a matter of course, or only if there seems to be an issue.
I ask because Roxy shows no signs whatsoever of an issue...no scooting, scratching, licking, or rubbing of any kind. The area looks perfectly normal and fine, no irritation, swelling or any kind of discharge. But there is a definite odor. I clean under her tail and apply gold bond powder, but it doesn't seem to help with the odor for long if at all. SO I am pretty sure it is an anal gland thing as opposed to a dirty/infected tail pocket thing.
Thoughts?

similar experience today
Today I took my Nacho to the groomer & she told me she took care of his anal glands. The weird thing is, I had no idea there was an issue. I noticed he was stinky yesterday & assumed he was gassy, but that was the only symptom. He wasn't acting odd or itching at all. Good luck!

Thanks for the responses...
...i'm from the same school (ain't broke don't fix) too.
To be sure it wasn't just a residual smell, I gave her a good bath. Usually it's very difficult to move her tail enough to inspect under there, but interestingly as soon as she gets in the tub she lifts her tail and keeps it raised. And she lets me poke aeround back there without any fuss. I followed the instructions on the BDW home page related to expressing the glands, and there was no discharge whatsoever. Seems fine now.
Anyways, thanks!

to the vet...
If the smell has lasted and bothered you for several days I'd make a trip to the vet to have them express them. But sometimes if a dog gets excited they will get that same anal gland stink and it goes away.

Agree...
sometimes the dog will express the glands when excited, with the pressure of merely passing gas, or when the area is stimulated by tail cleaning (without specific pressure on the anus). They can be expressed by your vet's office, or many groomers are skilled at this as well...check on cost so you won't be surprised (whether or not the vet charges an office visit as well as a fee for this service?).
Basically, my philosophy of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" applies to anal glands also...so don't think they need periodic treatment if the dog (or you) aren't showing any signs of a problem.
