Allergy Testing vs. Rx Food

Hello,

our Eng Bulldog male 14 mo has had a bad battle with, crusty/scab ear pinnas and his chin gets pustules/blisters.

He had a few courses of antibiotics and prednisone, which helps, but eventually the symptoms come back.

Our vet wanted to get allergy tested or try a rx diet. What can i do?

Any places where the rx diet is cheaper than 100 bucks a bag?

Thanks Andrew and Winston

Hello to Alison & Matilda

I am mostly a reader too, although I sometimes respond. It is very good to meet both of you. My Gabbie is very beautiful, but has some leg problems so he doesn't walk a lot but I would love to meet you & Matilda sometime. Gabriel is very sweet & friendly. My husband is a school administrator in Flagler County and I teach in Volusia County! Retirement is 2 years away for me!!!! happy.gif Yes, that is our same Dr. Bailey. We use both clinics but mostly Deland. Thanks for writing me back. It is so great to have a bulldog mom to talk with.

Hello

Some times it's a day or two before I get back to the forum here, I'm mostly a reader but when I saw that your vet was Dr. Bailey, I knew that we had a good thing in common. We live in Sanford Fl. Do you travel to Deland or New Symrna to visit Dr. Bailey's office? We are talking about the same Dr Bailey, right? Do you and Gabriel walk the dog friendly beach up there in Flagler? We do once in a while. Matilda is always ready to give kisses!

Skin problems

My bullie is 4 and has these kind of problems. I use a very good bulldog vet who is very conservative. Testing is a ripoff. Some bullies have allergies worse than others. We live in Florida & this just happens. When he gets bad, he goes to Dr. Bailey & has to get a short shot of pred & maybe antibiotics. I wash Gabbies's face and chin every day with a warm cloth & sometimes anitbacterial soap. You can also use Malaseb pledgets or listerine. If you have pred at home you can dose him (in small 10 mg. doses for a few days). I hope this helps. happy.gif

I agree/ We are from florida, also.

Dr Bailey is great. These issues are a part of our lives. We've got the routine down solid.

before any testing or expensive kibble....

i would go on a no grain food...or the best thing is to go on a elimination diet.....keep it very simple...chicken and brown (yes it has to be brown rice)
i have given you three diets give it 30 to 60 days to see improvement....
1)cottage cheese and rice.....
1/2 cup of cottage cheese to each 1 1/2 cups of rice (thats it very simple)
2)lamb and rice
braise your lamb if you dont like the idea of raw....i would mix equal portions of lamb and brown rice....
now this third diet is for dogs that have an allery to meats or you just need to detox....from over vacines....skin problems... i use this diet on my rescues to clean the system out before starting them on a healthy raw diet....
take 2 cups of soy beans, brown rice.celery and carrots.....soak your soy beans over nite to soften then drain off water...recover and cook beans (please note you can use pre cooked soy flakes for convience)
mix the cooked rice and beans with the fresh vegies...bake as a loaf for one hr at 350....i feed twice a day....
you can add to any meal some garlic flavor dogs like that....
i will guarantee you that your dogs problems will vanish if its a food related allergy...

allergy testing is about 300.00 i would go that rout vs rx food

alos are you using stainless steel bowles? if not that is the only kind you should use iwth a bulldog and wash them out after each feeding.

you might try some grain free foods, like natural balance.
