age to discover problems ?

at what age should a vet be able to find out if a pup has respitory, and or eye problems, should a vet be able to reconize say by 3mths of age or sooner?? i have asked all the owners of potentional bullies i have inquired about as to who their vet was, and has the sire or dam had any medical problems like the throat or eye or skin. of course none has, im just courious as to when a vet can spot some major problems like that

toss up

I'd like to be able to say with confidence that most all breeders will tell you if there are any considerable health issues with the dam and sire; and you should understand that not all that often does the breeder own the sire or have him live with them; many show dogs are co-owned, and on occasion the owner of the stud (being the more prominent breeder/kennel name) will be the seller too. Its probably not the case, however, and knowing there are health "issues" and then knowing how to deal with them can be a second matter...such as allergies or sensitivities.

No vet I know personally could give you a clean read on the genetics of a young dog by examining the pup at 3 mos or 6 mos...maybe at closer to one year because this breed has reached its full height by then, most other prominent issues would have come out such as elongated palate, entropion on multiple lids, monorchidism, kidney or bladder problems. I think I could say the same about most any other pure-bred dog in the middle-size-range, though. Again, experience with the breed is a huge part of having a healthy dog, and if one lacks experience then often a good breeder will be the mentor to fill that gap. Combine this with an experienced and caring vet (one who will explain the whys and hows) and you should have a successful ownership. happy.gif

depends on the problem......

i would of never known that wilson had a hypolastic treachea if he had not gotten aspirated pneumonia at 4 months.....it has not caused us any problems.....because of the antibotics it took over four months for his lungs to clear he got idc....their a pain in the butt....he twisted his rear foot and i had some x rays and he has hemi verterbrea now those will be a problem as he gets older.....
so it depends somethings you wont know unless something happens or you go looking for it.....
