Abnormal behavior and diarrhea

Last night Dink has started acting very mopey (sp?) and seems to be slumping and keeping to himself. Shyla tried to play with him and he yelped like he was in pain. I have rubbed him down and nothing seems to be bothering him. Same thing this morning when DJ go home, he seemed to be shaking like he was nervous (didn't seem like just head shakes more like his whole body) and yelped once for no reason.

We just recently transitioned them to Natural Balance potato and duck over the last week or so. His stools have been soft for a month or so, but today when we got up he had diarrhea all over their play area. I'm not sure if it's the food or if something else is wrong with him. Has anyone ever had issues with this food? I know several of you on here feed NB to your bullys. We are going to take him to the vet first thing Monday an are taking his treats away from him all together in case those may be making him feel bad (we give science diet treats). Should I make him some rice or continue feeding him the NB?

If anyone has any input we appreciate it, I hate to see him in pain and I'm not sure if we should just go ahead and take him to the emergency vet.

Thanks

I actually took a tick off of him within a week before....

all this started. I took him to the vet first thing Monday told them everything including about the tick. They never suggested Lyme disease. They did a test for internal parasites, it came back negative. Think it may be something with his digestive track so Dink is on prescription food and some antibiotics till Friday. He behavior started back to normal on Sunday. We take him back Friday for another check up I'll mention the Lyme disease then and see what they say. Thinks for bringing that up though cause I was worried when I found the tick in the first place even though we give them a pill every month for fleas ans ticks.

Maybe run a check for Lyme Disease?

This can cause on/off pains and lethargic behavior. A simple blood test will show if there was exposure. Are there deer/deer ticks where you live? Treatment is antibiotics given orally.

Thanks for the replys :)

Dink hasn't had diarrhea since last night at about 10pm, I also haven't seen him shake at all. However this morning on the way to go outside he yelped again. He's not limping or acting like anything is hurting and he is eating and drinking just fine so we are still confused. Can't wait to get him to the vet asap to make sure he is going to be alright. Will update as soon as we find anything out.

Check his ears maybe ear infection

One of my chi has this awhile back head was tilting to one side and was off balance she walked like she was drunk ears were red but we couldn't see all the way in. Vet gsve her clindamycin(sp?) for two weeks and she was better. Her behavior was very weird it looked like she was in pain and her eyes were bulging out like she was scared.

He definitely needs to be seen by a vet...

but as to whether he needs the ER or if you can wait until Monday morning, but explain to the vet's office that he has to be seen Monday morning! Tell the receptionist about his tremors and lack of coordination...that should be severe enough to be categorized as "an emergency". The trembling/shaking is not a good thing. Diarrhea always causes concern that the dog may become dehydrated, especially if he's acting weak/lethargic, so see if you can get him to drink, and some pedialyte (for babies) would be good. The behavior you described doesn't sound like the typical food problem so I can't advise you about that, sorry.

I agree.. take him to the vet...

This sounds a little more serious then just a food reaction, especially if he is shaking. I had a dog who got bloat before and if only I took him to the vet that night, then maybe I would've had a chance to save him. sad.gif .. this is hopefully not bloat though, since I think bloat symptoms are more severe (hunching over, wretching, unable to get comfortable), but it sounds like something is wrong internally.

I tried NB duck and potato, my bully got yeasty, face turned red, ears got dark brown wax, and then she developed a UTI... someone else posted that they heard NB may contribute to crystals in the urine.. so I switched to natures variety salmon/brown rice. Most of these grain free foods have potatoes which i thought may be contributing to my dogs yeastiness and soft poo... It seems as though she is doing much better with this new food, good firm poo too.
