Strange situation at my house. My mommy and her litter are just fine, the pups are 2 weeks old now. Pups are still seperate from mom unless I am right there with them. But here is what is happening now. I have another female (auntie Jezz) and she is very interested in the pups. When mommy is pottying the pups, Jezz comes over and tries to help. At first I thought this would upset mom so I kept Jezz far away. However, this morning while I was holding a pup for mom to potty, I let Jezz come up and sniff the pup. She began to help potty the pups too. Afterward she went over to mommy Belle and licked all over her too. She even tried to lay down in the box with the pups and mom. (and mom didn't growl or anything, weird)
Auntie Jezz has never had babies and this is Belle's first litter. Do you think that Jezz should be moved to another room totally from the pups? Could she think that they are hers?
How have other dogs in your house reacted to pups? Is there anything to watch for in regards to the dogs? Should I give auntie a toy to mother right now?
Thanks, Heather
That is just the cutest darn picture ever!
It depends on the girls
I often have co-parenting at my house. My Angel always came into milk when babies were in the house. When she had her own, she was the best mom ever. Here's a pic of her first co-parenting experience.
Angel is on the left, her mom (and mother of the litter) Gracie is on the right.

I find this so interesting.
My breeder friend's bitch just had a litter of Mastiff puppies. Mom has no milk....and they are bottle feeding. What a blessing it would be to have a "back up" mom with milk. :D
That's a shame though that your girls don't get along now. =(
Happy Holidays! No tree watering!

Breve' was like that when Bella had HOlly's litter
Breve' would get in the box and tits up, she got milk. It was not a good thing since i was showing her. She would wine and cry for the puppies. She thought they were hers. Breve' is the best momma and will get milk if any puppies are around. She got milk when we had chihuahua puppies.
Holly wanted to be with Breve' when Breve' had her puppies. That was a no go with Breve', they are her puppies and was not going to let anyone in with them.
Of course when Holly had puppies, Breve' wanted in with the puppies and Holly was saying NO.
Both my girls had puppies at the same time, now they hate eachother.

Re: 2 females but only 1 litter!
awww very sweet!! but I wouldn't allow her in with mom around. I have a girl that would sneak in with pups and try and nurse them when mom wasn't around..... When she had her own puppies she just LOVED them and would let them nurse till 12wks of age. I think it means she'll be a good mom if she has her own puppies one day, but would be very careful about her around mom and pups, never know when mom will have enough of it!

trait passed down by wolves....
...my vet told me, when it happened when I bred min-pins awhile back. I had one female with a litter and the other have a false pregnancy at the sametime. They helped each other. BUT I NEVER left them together unsupervised. Females in wolf packs do this often to help the mother and her litter. Higher survival rate of litters.
