2 day old puppies questions...

Hello all I just want to first say thank you so much for all the help you have given me!

First question, when I feed the pups Boston lays down and does a good job letting the babies nurse, but she shakes like she is cold off and on, is that okay?

Second how much poop should I be seeing per day from each pup? They pee regularly. Boston is still frustrating me a ton in this area, she only will feed them, after that she wants nothing to do with the babies. Can this change or will I be buying a case of cotton balls?

Third, with Boston unwilling to clean them up, can I bathe them when some poop gets on them from another puppy? So far I have just been using the warm water and cotton balls to wipe as much off as much poop as I can. If some gets left on them for a little while is that okay or dangerous?

Finally a couple babies have had yellow colored bubble like poop today, is that ok?

Thanks for all your help!

I am giving her a 1/2 cup of cottage cheese...

in the morning and again at night, should I increase that amount per day? Also should I give her the Pet Tabs Plus with Calcium in addition to the cottage cheese?

Have you ever had a momma only feed but completely ignore the pups otherwise?

Thanks again for all the great help!

Jeremy

Re:

Are you giving your bitch calcium supplements? She should be getting 2 Pet Tabs Plus with Calcium daily. If you don't have these, give her Tums, or be sure she gets lots of cottage cheese. as I think the shakes you are seeing are from calcium deficiency. For a bad case of the shakes, give her yogurt with honey mixed into it, about a cup yogurt and 1/2 cup honey.
How much puppy poop you get from the pups is dependent on how much they eat and what is excess (the poop). If their poop is runny and white, that is overfeeding. Giving the pups Ben-e-Bac will help them get the most from the milk/formula they take in and will in time firm up the stools.
Your bitch may never clean the pups. Personally I don't consider it a big deal to stimulate and clean the pups myself. The extra handling gets them used to being handled and it gives you a chance to evaluate the pup's 'feel' and check their hydration condition.

everything sounds NORMAL

it will take momma a few days to get the hang of things. I put a bit of nutrical on the bottom of the puppies to get her to lick them. I hole the puppies to the face of the momma and let them lick off the nutrical.

Shaking is the milk is coming down, pain or cold. Just pet her and talk to her, it will calm her down. Also make sure she is eating enough food, if she has headshakes she needs calcium so give her come cheese a few times a day.

Poop sounds fine, puppy might have some gas in the belly. get some infant gas drops from the store and give them a few drops.

I gave my bitch lowfat cottage cheese at least 2xday

and extra vitamins, and I also broiled (not too dry)beef liver and gave her about 1/2lb of it 2-3xWeek, which she LOVED. (I cut it into one-inch cubes and she gobbled it so fast I had to count my fingers!!) Be sure to use beef or calves liver, not pork. With cottage cheese, you may want to give it separately from her dogfood because some mamas tend to get into their Diva-mode and with the cheese and liver, the dogfood doesn't look very inviting. LOL. But they still need it...puppy formula kibble is high-calorie and that's what she needs to produce enough milk for 8 nursing pups.

The only reason I would put a very small pup under water (and just the tail/rump end) would be if there was dried poop under a tight tail and I didn't want to keep rubbing/causing irritation so a little warm water drip at the sink, and some gentle fingertips was enough to clean up the anus. happy.gif

Puppies

If the pups are only 2 days old mom sometimes won't have anything to do with them for a week or so. If she had a c-section she has no idea where these little creatures came from so it will take her awhile to bond but not to worry she will get the hang of it. Congratulations on the little ones.

Just out of curiosity.. When do the pups

start relieving themselves on their own? Without the aid of mom or human?
