2 1/2 wk old pups with very loose bowels
Submitted by thunderstruckbulldog on April 20, 2010 - 11:15pmNikki has mastitis, pulled puppies off and started bottle feeding...expected some diahrrea. I am giving a few drops of pedialyte and sugar to them this feeding to let their digestive tract rest. I have some pro pectilin gel the vet gave me but they don't seem to take it well and it is more a paste than a gel so they don't suck it off the finger well(seems waxy). Any suggestions? It is 1am on the east coast so running to the store basically out so we're limited to what I have on hand which amounts to kaopectate, pepto bismol, childrens imodium liquid, pumpkin, yogurt, etc.......the stools is not bloody or mucousy-just loose. Thanks!!

We've added plain kefir to their bottles and things are finally firming up.

Laura if your bitch is on antibiotics they are going through the
-ing off all the bacteria in their digestive tract. you NEED to get benebac at a PetSmart, PetCo or PetsPlus and give it to them at each feeding( 1/2 turn of the little wheel that determines the dose should be good. If you cannot fine Benebac then go to a health food store and get live culture acidopholus capsules (these must be kept in the refrigerator). Open 1 at each feeding into a very small glass add 1 tablespoon of cool water and stire then while stirring and using an eye dropper give about 1/3 a dropper to each pup at each feeding. Acidopholus is what is used to make the yogurt but in a concentrated amount and I have used it to save very sick pups with this kind of diarhea.
