1 week old E.B. puppies...

Needing to get stools solid. Pumpkin in a can??? and how much???

No thanks to all of you.....

This site is great. I was blessed with my 8 but I tell you I got a lot of good info from here.
Anytime.
Javier

Always great to get first-hand recent feedback.

Thanks, Javier, for sharing!

yes! thank you for sharing..

I love to hear of the different things all of you use and what results you get. It give us all so many different choices when something is not working for one of us if we all chime in with our tried and true, and new things we use. hanks to all who have responded and I'll watch for any new comments also!

Are they 'overeating'???

From what numbers you listed, and them being only one week old, they are in a very rapid gain schedule. How often are they nursing? It may be that the food is running thru softer and more yellowish because it has less time to absorb in the gut with them taking in food quickly. If their bellies are round, and they are eating every 4hrs for 15-20mins, that should be enough to maintain a good gain/growth and digestive cycle. I yield to Helen's expertise and others who suggest usign the Benebac as they would know its high value. happy.gif

called all over looking for it last night!!!

neither of the petsmarts nor the vets around here carry it anymore. we have weighed them every feeding since they got home and all have doubled in size except the runt. He has a milk from nose problem but still gaining everyday. At birth he was 8.5 and now is 14.25. The rest are 24 -27. I will try to find Benebac online today just to have around but the way it sounds this mustard liquid poop is normal. I hope so! I was worried.

soft stools

I used benbac and it cleared it up the next day. As far as them crying. Make sure their tummies look full (should look a little rounded) and it helps to weigh them either before or after each meal if unsure. Good Luck.

how often and how much is the norm?

these guys were going like once a day and it was brownish and formed, now its yellow and slimey. They are eating fine and then like twenty min. later one or two will start crying like they are starving. I make sure they are all sucking and not falling asleep while on mom. Don't want to take them out on an unneeded trip to vet in 10 degree weather if I don't have to. If it were a bug they have what other signs or symptoms would I be looking for to warrent they are in trouble?

soft stools

Your vet will usually give it to you without any problem or seeing them as it is quite common to have soft stools as they adjust to the outside world. (-:

My experience....

I just had 8 pups 8 wks ago and was using Benebac for 3 days
and was not impressed with it. Poop was real soft and small clumps and pups didn't drink as much. I was told to use Similac Alimentum ( from this site)and what a difference. Pups ate more and put on weight rapidly but not over weight. My pups range in weight at birth from 8 oz to 1 lb. At 8wks (all 8) they were at 4.9 lbs to 5.9lbs. They were on Alimentum only for 3 days ( every 3 hrs) and on both mom and Alimentum for about 6 wks. Poops were always soft and yellow and not clumpy. They urinated a lot more than poop and mom cleaned them up well. No drops for constipation, head shakes and or belly aches. It is pricey but well worth it. Good luck.

normal...........??????

If this is your first litter. It is normal if its mustard yellow pretty soft poops the first two weeks or so. (probably the consistancy of mustard/ketchup also)

thanks!!
