with MRSA. We have had skin infections in the last 2 months which cleared then started back up again. In our vet visit last week, I asked them to check for thyroid problems and to check for bacteria on the skin (I forgot the name....something aerobic.) His thyroid is normal.
During the vet visit, he had skin problems and we went home with Clavamox. He cleared up with the Clavamox then I got the call today that he has MRSA. They will do another test to see if there are other antibiotics that can help him but so far the antibiotics we normally use will not work on this superbug.
I'm so sad and so anxious too because I am going on a 22-day trip out of the country. Currently, Bernard is doing great, his skin problems have healed. His ears are clean. I really don't know what to do next. Please pray for Bernard that he won't have any breakouts while my husband and I are gone.
I welcome any information/suggestions on MRSA....treatments, cures, preventions, anything. Conventional or holistic.
Thanks.
Suzette. I am so sorry about his diagnosis.
I know that others here can help you more, but I will be praying for you and Bernard. That is the best I can offer. And a big hug.

Oh my....I don't even know what to say..............
and your trip out of the country couldn't come at a worse time. I will keep you in my prayers.
I'm so sorry Suzette
Rhiann has done alot of study on MRSA. You may want to email her or maybe she will see your post.
I had MRSA
What you need to have them do is to send a sample to a lab to determine what kind of antibiotic it is succeptible to. Then he needs to take those meds for several months. I had to bathe with hibiclense (sp?) every morning and night, I think there is a dog version of Hibiclense. He should be getting vitamins or supplements to strengthen his immune system. They tested me for every autoimmune disease known to man, and I came up clear, they just figure my immune system is weak and that's why I caught it even though I was not at risk for it, meaning I didnt work in the medical injury, I wasnt hospilized etc. It's not the end of the world, I came though it fine, in a few months he will probably be as good as new.
Thanky ou for the information.
That's what's being done right now. Bernard's culture is being tested and on the first round of testing, common anitbiotics such as Cephalexin are not working. They are working on a second test and I don't have the results from that yet.
hang in there....
bernard is a strong fella....one step at a time.

attitude is altitude!
I will make sure that you both are in my thoughts and prayers.

Sorry the news sucks, but I had MRSA pneumonia in the fall
and I lived, barely. The first order of business is clean your house, and dump all anti-bacterial chemicals like handsoap-my strain thrives on that crap. Wash hands frequently with soap since it likely came from a human at the home. You all will keep giving it to each other without these steps. DO NOT touch your eyes or mouth with your hands! MRSA pneumonia was easily the worst thing I've ever gone through, and at its worst I was losing my mind. The good news is he will probably be just fine!
I think the only anti-bacterial stuff
I have at home is our hand soap and that is definitely going in the trash.
Bernard is doing great. His skin is clear and his ears are clean. I don't know why our vet is telling me that his antibiotics (Clavamox) is probably not working when his skin cleared after we gave it to him. I am still digesting the news and reading up on MRSA on pets.
Suzette
I sent you a message on FB.

Suzette
I've been having a heck of a time with Onslow his skin and fur has been peeling and falling off, Is that what was happening with Bernard? I've been dealing with this since March and he isn't much better. I did have the vet scrape him and she said no mites or bacteria. Your input on Bernard would be appreciated (symptoms). Thanks Suzette. Big smooches and healing vibes to sweet Bernard.
How did they test for bacteria?
Our vet took a swab of his skin then sent it out to be tested.
Please read several lines below on the thread on how it started.
So sorry to hear that diagnosis about
Bernard!
It sounds like you are doing just what you should be doing. Become as well informed as you can!
I'll be anxious to hear how that sweet little guy does.
Suzette, please take a deep breath, Checter had MRSA
and has been treated succesfully. They did a culture on him and found what AB will work for particular strain and he has been on meds for a while. He will need to be on it for about a month, but you will not know he is affected in any way. Chester has all kind of bacterial infections and we are in the process of treating them all. He is allergic to some AB (they cause anemia and ceizures) so he had to be on Baytril) for all his treatment (4 weeks that we just finished). He is still on another med for MRSA but next week we will be doing another culture to see if it is gone completely. It is treatable, they are (bulldogs) troopers and they will be OK. e-mail me if you have any questions. And give that sweet Bernard a big sweet hug from us. NAd enjoy your trip, he will be just fine while on meds.
My Cocker Spaniel has MRSA.............
And she is doing wonderfully! She has never been healthier!
My vet and I have tried all sorts of stuff on her to help her ears (swollen shut) skin and other problems but I guess it was a year a little over a year ago she put Friday on Staph Lystate Injections and she is WONDERFUL! Her ears are open now, one fully, the other one partially and my little nut case is a totally different dog! It is amazing how well this dog is doing at this point. Everyone, and I mean everyone, who knew Friday before cannot believe the transformation.

The injections I do at home since the are just under the skin and not in a muscle....it is easy and I believe anyone can learn how to do it. My vet taught me, it is very simple. Silly Friday actually licks her lips like she is getting a treat....she must know that is what is making her feel sooo good!
Good luck and try not to stress about it.....
Bernard's ears look good.
It is not swollen and not even dirty (atleast as it appears to me on the outside) so I was surprised when the vet told me last Tuesday that he also has ear infection. He is not even acting sick....still have his appetite. At this very moment, he is barking at the gardener. Lol!
I am waiting to hear back from our vet on the 2nd test and we will go from there.
My stress level is a little bit down now from what I am reading from people like you who went through this or are going through it. Since yesterday's diagnosis, I have been in contact with several people who are either going through it or have been through it. Thank God for the power of the internet!!
Sorry to read this..
Bernard is a fighter...take a deep breath, read as much as you can & learn. Sending you both many prayers for answers & recovery.

Don't know much about it...
But it sounds treatable. And it sounds like your beautiful boy will be OK. Hang in there, mom!
MRSA
Curly had mrsa on his head, and I had it in my armpit(of all places) We are both fine, don't worry,Bernard will be fine too!
Oh Suzette, I don't know a thing about MRSA but please stay
positive, I know how much you love your boy, may the Good Lord keep him healthy, sending you hugs and Bernard too, stay positive.
Thank you for your prayers and feedback.....
Bernard looks good right now. He doesn't have any open wounds. He is not even itchy.
It started out as hives about 2 months ago. We went to the vet and he was given Cephalexin. After that dose, it looks like it's starting back again. He has 3 to 4 spots on his body without fur, small spots (smaller than a penny.) He had hives on his neck that was starting to get wet so we went to the vet again and it cleared up again. Last Tuesday, I noticed red marks on his neck again so another trek to the vet but this time I had the intention of having his thyroid checked (which came back normal.) The vet also got some culture and sent it out to get tested and he called me back yesterday with the MRSA diagnosis. He asked for approval on another testing (I think to check for more drugs) and I am still waiting for results. At that time, we went home with Clavamox and it seems to work. His redness disappeared, spots cleared up. He is not lethargic, eats well......still runs to the kitchen when he hears me preparing his food. I am confused why the vet is telling that the meds are probably not working but his skin is clearing up. Right now, I am just waiting for the vet to call me with the results of the 2nd culture test. We will go from there.
He is taking Nuvet vitamins for his immune system and his joints since he was a puppy. He eats raw food. If you have any suggestions on better supplements that will build up his immune system, please let me know. Thank you.
I have 2 friends that had MRSA
and while yes, it did take a while to get rid of it, it did eventually clear up and now they are both fine!

Suzette...
Unfortunately, I have more experience with MRSA than I wish I did. Please email me privately at khartney@verizon.net and I would be happy to share with you what i know. I'm so sorry that you're going through this.
