I really appreciated everyone's supportive messages yesterday. It felt good to know that I was not alone and others had gone through similar things.
Maverick appears to be on the mend today, though I'm not getting my hopes up too high. We had another night of in and out the door, but this time only every couple hours (so an improvement). Unfortunately he's still passing alot of blood, but things seem to be firming up slightly. I am lucky to have a very clean dog, we set him up in an X-pen in the kitchen with his Kuranda bed so although we did have a couple accidents through the night (I was sleeping a little too soundly on the couch) he would just get off his bed, do his thing and get back on... no mess on the puppy, or poopy footprints everywhere. He would also sleep in the furthest corner of the bed from the mess LOL.
He's still eating and drinking (thank goodness) and his orange face after the pumpkin is priceless. He's a little more tired/less energetic today I imagine from the meds as well as the toll it's taking on his body, but I think things are turning the corner.
On a side note he is a miserable little man to give pills too! This morning cutting them up into 6 and hiding them in hotdogs seemed to work... yesterday the hotdogs were too large so he'd catch it, eat the hotdog and spit out the hidden pill! Little devil!
And for Pat - he is on Flagyl (metronidazole), funnily the same drug I was on this fall when I had C. difficile. I guess I'll have to keep him off the booze for a few days!
Pill taking
We give Spanky a Pepcid every night with canned Hill's I/Z. It works very well. He considers it his bedtime treat!
well glad he's on the mend....

for a dog with diarrhea...
if a dog is having diarrhea, some of the pill hiding foods (hot dogs and cheese) aren't the best to use. I have found that canned Hill's i/d works great for hiding the pills too. It is a diet vets often recommend for a few days along with Flagyl. It easily molds around the pills and you can still do the 1,2,3 trick.

This pill trick always works for me...
"1,2,3 Secret Cookie (pill) Trick"
Prepare 3 little balls of Velveeta Cheese (Velveeta works best because you can mold it like Play Doh.)
First ball is tiny pea size of just cheese. Second ball has pill in it. Third ball is just pea size cheese again.
Show dog "COOKIES!!!!"
Give dog first ball of just cheese, quickly follow with second ball with pill and IMMEDIATELY, before he has a chance to think about it, give him third ball of just cheese.
The idea is, he will gulp down the second "Pill" really fast because he is so excited to get the next one.
If he is really suspicious, you could throw in a few more cheese bites before the pill and after the pill.
I've done this using turkey, cream cheese, and regular cheese too. Velveeta works best if the dog likes it.

Thanks for the update! Glad things are looking up...
what a good patient Maverick is....I find putting the pills in peanut butter or squishing them into soft bread and then smearing peanut butter on it works good too!
