At our hospital....

If angioplasty is done or stenting, they have to stay overnight. We check the groin frequently, to make sure no hematoma formation is happening or retro peritoneal bleed. It also depends if angiomax or integrillin is given.

And if you have the regular type of "closure" they pull the sheath and apply pressure to the groin (and it is uncomforable) all the while monitoring your heart to make sure it doesn't drop or go into an arrythmia. That is usually 15-30 min.

Or we also at times use a star closure, which is a different type of closure and decreases bedrest time.

Hope this helps.

usually go home after the procedure..

even if they find a problem...may keep you if you have a major life threatening find..My H has had so many of these since his heart attack @ 36 yrs old..They found some severe problems, but sent us home and made arrangements for a ICD/pacemaker inplant the next week...

They're ^ correct

Firstly, it depends on what they find. Also, they will want to closely monitor the site of insertion (usually the groin area) after the catherter is removed. You're usually on bedrest for a number of hours while they monitor the site.

I believe it depends on what they find.

My Uncle has had both procedures done at the same time and has always stayed overnight. Wish he would have quite smoking/eating bad stuff...he would have not had to have it done so much.

Do you know whether someone who undergoes . . .

a cardiac catherization usually goes home the same day, or are they usually kept in the hospital overnight?

Not really...

A cardiac cath means that a catheter is threaded into the heart. It can be positioned so that it can "look" at specific structures or blood vessels of the heart (through dye injection). If a narrowing of an artery that supplies the blood to the heart muscle is seen, the catheter can actually be advanced to that narrow area. A ballon is then inflated to open up the stricture. That's the angioplasty part.
