Audrey had her first advanced class last night

and she did SO MUCH better handling the other dogs. I had a tough time, I get so nervous when she starts even looking at another dog, I tend to yank her away. The teacher/trainer took Audrey for a bit, and there seems to be hope that someday Audrey will be able to pass another dog without trying to rip it's head off! I am not trying to force her to play with another dog, or even force her to "meet" another dog, just be comfortable enough with its presence that she can calmly walk by it, and sit by my side while I speak to its owner.
Audrey did AWESOME on the down/stay! We had contests on which dog would down stay the longest. First we passed our dogs around and we each had a chance to work with the other dogs to put them in a down/stay. Audrey did it for every single person very readily, but she did get back up before they released her. When I got her back, she and one other dog were not budging. The trainer came up behind her, walked over her, threw a bag of treats so it flew past her head and skidded behind her, made noise, and Audrey didn't budge once! Then she got out the tennis ball and threw it so it went right past her face and next to her. That was too much, Audrey HAD to get that tennis ball. The other dog couldn't resist the tennis ball either.
So, hopefully I'll be able to overcome MY nervousness around other dogs, and Audery will continue to get more and more comfortable around other dogs.

I doubt Audrey will ever have THAT much fun

with strange dogs, but that's OK by me. I just expect her to not want to rip them to shreds just for breathing her air. OK, so she may always WANT to, but I expect her to refrain from doing so.
I need a human trainer now to help stop me from overreacting every single time we get near another dog! I have not yet found that balance between correcting her and allowing her to express her dislike at then being too close.

Thanks! The other dogs in class

are perfect for her. There are 3 others, and one of them is my Step-mom's golden that Audrey has been staying with since she was 9 weeks old. The other 2 are calm, and so non-aggressive it really does help. Audrey does get freaked out when we try to pass each other, which in turn freaks me out, but it was very encouraging for her to be able to sit in the classroom with those 2 other dogs and stay calm! (as long as they were not in her "zone")

great job~~!!!

yes!

even that one small moment when she looks away from the dog she wants to bite and looks at me is a GRAND moment. We still have a lot of work to do, she still tries to bite when another dog passes her. But in class the trainer took her and brought her pretty close to the other dogs, after asking their owners to hold them, (as in don't let the leash out and let them get any closer than the distance she brought them to)and she fed Audrey and the other dog treats right by each other, and Audrey was FINE! When we started moving around though Audrey would try to bite when they passed her. And my first reaction was to jerk her away from them and not let her go. I have as much to work on as Audrey does!

Thanks!

I am hoping we'll both be able to overcome this so I don't have to worry so much everytime we go somewhere.

It's great for me too!

It's nice to be able to see how other dogs react and behave. And even better when you get your own back. happy.gif

Yay!

Good for you for not pushing her. I expect my dogs to be behaved (and sometimes, they even are! lol), but I just don't understand why people expect their dogs to like all the other dogs they see.
Training sounds like it's progressing well!!

Great job, Cathy & Audrey!

One of the best things you can do with a reactive dog is teach them a default action (ie sit, down, etc.) and showing them that they can be around WELL-BEHAVED dogs under control is a great setting to help her overcome her fear! happy.gif Keep up the good work!

StampOutCrimeCO_m

that is hugh

coming from another owner who has a dog that hates other dogs, keep up the good work, it feels pretty good when they accomplish even just the smallest thing.

Well done on your first step!

It is one of the most difficult things to cure, agression to other dogs, mostly because your behaviour is such a big part of it.

Been there with my first (and second)dog. It is very enlighting to see that when somebody else handles your dog, the agression isn't there or much less.
Brave of you to go out and cure this problem!

Keep up the good work!
