that's just the tile and laying it and hot mopping the shower floor. Shower is 3 x 5 and walls will be tiled to ceiling. Rest of room is 5x5 and it has a 30" vanity and toilet in that area. Only the floor will be tiled in the 5 x 5 area. Shower will have a ledge. I'm putting glass doors, but that, nor the sheet rock is included in the $9,000 price.
I added it up area to be tiled and it's 138 sq ft ( I didn't deduct for vanity area which will not be tiled.)
Came out to $65.21 a square foot. Am I nuts, or is that outrageous???
The tile guy tried to tell me materials alone are over $4,000 and labor is $5,000.

elaine my hubby is a contractor- numbers for you
first off that is outragious, 5 grand for the labor for such a tiny area.
it can be broken down like this
a 12x12 tile is then 65.21
a 6x6 tile would be 32.50
does this include a new subfloor membrane, ect????
grout and finishing,
what kind of tiles have you picked, have you considered buying all the materials and hiring a tile contractor- there is a diference between a general contractor and a tile contractor, Tiling is a special trade and they will do a better and quicker job for less than 5 grand
you can email me if you want any other info. good luck
LOL I'll ask him that...
nope. the tile is $2.65 for a 6 x 6

I would expect to pay that for a total remodel..
that makes sense for rip out and redo of whole thing. This is just tile.

Jon Katz "Soul of a Dog"
yes, doing that...
his boss is supposed to call me today to verify the quote is accurate. Now that I have other bids, I have something to back up my questioning the price. I'll probably get the old, "You get what you pay for" from him. Three times what others are bidding isn't a fair quote. They are all bidding on doing it the exact same way, so there is no discrepancy there. If guy #1 didn't do it right, I could have it redone two more times before I was up to the price of guy #1.
Problem is, tradesmen do not like their quotes challenged. This sucks because they do beautiful work. They probably ripped us off on our other house too. My husband ran that show. I wasn't involved. He would pay whatever anyone charged without question.

Jon Katz "Soul of a Dog"
i just did pretty much the exact same thing
Except i gutted the whole bath and started new. New underfloor heating, travertine floor, vanity, toilet, glass shower doors, Full tile shower with Kohler base. All this and i didnt spend nowhere near $9000....
Pretty much exact same measurements
If you KNOW the quality of his work
and you like it, why not try to negotiate a better deal with him first? Tell him that price is too high. You are NOT going to pay it. He will either get closer to the other quotes you have beeen getting or he's going to lose the job.
AT least you know what you are getting with his work, and he might be willing to come down to keep the job.
Cathy
when she first came home
you must have good taste in tile
does the labor charge include a disney vacation for 6 (including flight) while your bathroom is out of business?
bulldogs ehh!
Oh! Well, check him out!
But that price is totally in the right range. If he is a valid contractor with good references, it would be worth using him. Did you get any other bods besides the idiot high one and the 2800? Just curious.
Amy and Sophia
Holy cow ! Installing a gold toilet too ? (eom)
Angie's List might be a good way...
to get some feedback. Also, you could give feedback on the contractor who was a pain.
I already got 2 other licensed quotes for 1/3 that bid..

I hate to say it...
...but that sounds about right. You'd think though that with this economy, you could do better. I got a quote for something similar 4 years ago at $8K. I finally got around to doing it about 2 years ago. Add tile for vanity, two porcelain sinks, a tub and glass shower doors. Gulp...I paid $13K. If you tiled yourself...or paid someone unlicensed...you could do better.
thanks for your input everyone!
story to be continued. I'm going to have to invite you all to come over after this project is done!

Yea, but..
I don't know anything about him. I'd have to research him and ck refs and see other work. He called me within 10 minutes of my internet request. And he called me back with a bid within 5 minutes of that. Sounded really nice.

yea me too..
my husband could care less. He just want's it done. I'm not willing to pay triple just to be finished.
They did do a nice job on the main house tile. Can't imagine how they stay in business if they are so much higher than anyone else.

subway tile is shaped like a rectangle..
Called "Subway" tile because they use it in the subway. Dal tile plain old cheap glazed shiny ceramic tile. I've been picking tile for over a year for this house. I settled on the cheap tile because the color matches the cabinet best. I have samples. They sell this tile at Home Depot.

too much imo
Sounds like a lot.. I'd research a bit more and shop around and then make a decision.. For that type of quote, I'd youtube videos on how to do it myself!!! Haha
Take it.
That is about exactly right. Really my friend:-) If you have anything you need, please let me know....at least questions wise! I can help in that area:-)
Amy and Sophia
My first phone quote called back and said $2,800..
that's for mud walls in shower and hot mop. Dal Tile is what I've picked out and it's about $2 a tile.

What is a 3x6 "subway"?
I've never heard that term.
Also, what kind of tile are yout talking about? Ceramic? Porcelain? Marble? Granite?
I'm not sure, but I think DalTile is just a brand name, like Mohawk, etc. Thus, there are many, many types of tiles sold under the DalTile name.
I strongly recommend that you personally go visit some local tile stores and ask lot of questions. IMO, you should pick out your tile first, then pick a contractor. And get at least three or four quotes both for the tile and for the labor. I spent almost a year picking a tile. After I found one I liked, I then went to several tile stores to get quotes for the price of the tile and for the price of the labor. The quotes for the labor were all in a narrow range of about $2.75 per square foot to $3.25 per square foot, but again, that was for ceramic and porcelain tiles. I ruled out all of the porous tiles like marble, slate, and Travertine because the dogs might have an accident and I didn't want the urine passing thru the tile to the cement subfloor.
Oh, one other thing, the type of grout you use affects the price. The best grout in terms of not being porous is an epoxy grout, but the labor for installing it is around 10 to 30% higher. The downside is that it's not easy to find an installer who knows how to install epoxy grout.

I think so too!
they are the ones that did our main house granite and tile. I never knew what we paid because I wasn't involved. We do not have good luck with honest contractors, I guess.

Jon Katz "Soul of a Dog"
Run Darlin:-)
We are contractors, and unless your tile is being imported from Greece or Italy, it should not cost that much....and the labor price is completely out of sight of reality. Like Kathy said, Home Depot usually has decent contractors....they are screened fairly well and have to be reliable and within reason price wise. Try that before you allow this contractor to do anything for you. According to our calculations, for very high end tile, grout, labor, etc, $20.00 a sq foot is a very high price. So then $65.21 is unheard of. My hubby said he would do that job for about 3000.00
Amy and Sophia
now that's cheap! Wow!
we do have Home Depot and I did think about getting a price from them. I'm waiting on the "Service Magic" referrals to call first.
You know, they say to get at least three bids and we did that when looking for a general contractor on the main house. I'm anxious to see what other tile contractors come in at.

No way Elaine...
this is rip off.
thanks Gary..
I have a whole house full of slate tile and it's terrible to maintain. My cleaning lady uses a stiff brush and scrubs it on her hands and knees! I love it outside, but I'd never pick it for my kitchen or bathrooms again. This house came that way, so I had no choice.

$2 Dal Tile 6x6 on the floor, 3x6 subway on walls, and 4x4 on sh
nothing fancy. I couldn't find any that matched my cabinet color better and I don't really like all the trims and molded tiles. There is a window in the shower.
I know CA labor is higher than other areas, but pahleeeez!

I logged on to Service Magic and already got a call from one tile guy. He took my measurements and tile info and called back within 10 mins saying $2,800. That's for mudded walls and hot mop. Of course, I don't know him from Adam, but it's good to have a price comparison. Contractors shouldn't be off on bids by $6,000!
I'll be anxious to hear what you paid. Remember, this is just the tiling. Everything is already out of the bathroom, so it's sub floor and studs right now. Plumbing and vanity are in.

Keep in mind that many tiles, such as slate, are very porous
I almost went with Travertine, for example, but read a lot of bad things about it because it's so porous.
I wanted to put in porcelain tiles but just couldn't find one I liked. I can't recall all of the factors you are supposed to consider when picking a tile, but there are about 4 or 5 major ones. Some of those are PEI number, MOH (measure of hardness), and water absorption percent. Regarding the PEI, which is some sort of industry standard (for quality, I think), I think the scale goes from 1 to 5, with 3 or 4 being the recommended number for residential use and 5 being the recommended number for commercial use, such as in mall stores.
If you Google "factors to consider in selecting a tile," you should get a lot of hits explaining the five factors and what they mean. Most tiles have those factors listed on the label on the back of the tile samples in stores.

That's outrageous, at least by Arizona standards...
we paid a little over 5K for a complete bathroom remodel, new counter tops, tiled shower, tub, etc. We've had home depot do some work for us, do you have one of those nearby? I recently had a guy install tile floors in this house, three large bathrooms and it cost $800 including the tile.
Kathy, Ollie and Chester
I had 560 square feet tiled for about $1,400
the room is almost 20x30 feet. But that was ceramic tile. The amount was the total of labor and tile, as well as putting in the shoe moulding afterwards.
The price quoted to you sounds outrageous, but what kind of tile are you using. Reticulated porcelain, for example, is much more expensive than ceramic. And of course, marble is much more expensive than both of those.
The most I have ever paid to have tile laid was $3.00 per square foot, but again that was not for marble.
Try Googling the price of the tile he ordered for you.
Also, before having my rooms done, I did a tremendous amount of research. Just about every thing I found or every person I heard from pointed me in the direction of John Bridges' message boards. He is considered a sort of national expert on laying tile. Here is his web site, which includes a lot of photos. Be sure to type in the name of your tile in his Search window:

Hey Elaine
That is about the size we had done. I will check our quotes and see what we were charged. It sure sounds like alot but you know construction costs are so dang expensive.
craigs list,
many people are doing side jobs and on craigs list.
I did my back splash for less then 100.00
I did Cathy's Back splash for less then 100.00
I would look at taking classes at home depot and doing it your self. It's not that hard. I priced out doing a new bathroom, and it was much muhc less. shop around at home depot, lowes and your local tile store
