According to the A C K....

Raising and selling dogs is a business for profit for many people. THERE SHOULD BE NO STIGMA ATTACHED to earning money by selling dogs; problems Adminse when the dogs are poorly bred, housed in poor conditions, denied proper medical care, are sick when sold, or are advertised falsely.

Let's all do our taxes!!! Calling youself a hobby kennel or hobby whatever does not preclude you from paying taxes. Taxes are calculated according to INCOME, not profit. Accounting 101.

Thank You, Patti

these are the breeders I am talking about/to. Of course, if you are breeding a few dogs as a hobby it is difficult if not impossible to get the IRS to allow your expenses. That sucks for those of you who are doing this in a sincere effort to protect a breed and for the sheer love of animals. You are the ones who deserve to be able to offset the expense of taking care of animals.

I will tell you, though, your dedication is appreciated by forces way more powerful than the taxman.

and thanks for being mature enough to not make fun of the typo above.

A K C......im quite sure you all understood the typo

and the intent of the message in the first place. so control your lol-ing at someone's mistake. Must be a real hoot to laugh at typographical errors.

You must account for the income generated from breeding dogs. This is a friendly reminder, not a threat of doom.

but remember what the great Mark Twain said about the two costants in the universe???? death and taxes???? well, he did. take my word for it.

LOL

I couldn't have identified the acronym better.

Excuse me, "the Avenger" is quoting ACK........not AKC...

That is the American Club of KnowItAlls.....That explains this thinking.

I agree Helen, same thing happened to me, and others I know

I had an accountant and kept perfect books for five years claiming as a business. I NEVER made a profit. As you said, it is an EXPENSIVE HOBBY....I know of others that had audits and the IRS went back, and disallowed things saying it was a hobby.

Needless to say, those breeders that breed ONLY for profit, raising numerous litters a year, minimal vet expenses for health testing, no showing and exhibiting their dogs, etc., certainly do make a good profit, and that should be claimed as income.

Do Not Forget that expenses are also included when you account f

if you cannot claim an income over expenses IRS says you cannot claim . For 3 years I added income and listed expenses for which I kept the receipts against it. IRS told me I could not because I made less than it cost so I do not list anything period. If I cannot claim expenses then I cannot claim income.
