Worn Down Nails from Dragging His Paws .... (w/Pics)

Hello everyone, and thanks in advance for your help. I have a 4 month old little boy named Hurley who drags his front paws when he walks which is wearing down his nails to little stubs (the nails in the middle of each paw are my main concern). He just finished his puppy vaccinations this past week, so it's only recently that he has been out walking around on the sidewalk which is when I noticed the excessive wear. In addition, he's getting over a sprained wrist on his right front leg which is causing him to limp a little and drag the paw even more (the middle nail on this paw looks close to bleeding).

Has anyone experienced this before? Is the paw dragging just a puppy thing that he will out grow? His paws are really big for his size and I always figured that he would grow into them. For the moment, I'm just going to keep him off the pavement until his wrist heals and his nails grow back. However, I'm really worried that this is a bigger issue and that I won't be able to take him on the sidewalk. Living in San Francisco, that would be so unfortunate. Does anyone have an words of wisdom for me?

Thanks again,

Brandon

he is super cute and his nails are fine

Bulldog nails should be short and if they have correct movement they will wear down thier nails when they walk. Thats shuffle or side wise motion is ok. Bullies tend to drag thier feet at times..no biggie.
he looks great! Nice looking pup.

Re: he is super cute and his nails are fine

Thanks for your feedback. That shuffle or sideways motion is exactly what I was worried about. I think it's the combination of his wrist being sprained (he's favoring his right front leg which has his gate all out of whack) and the fact that is nails have never been this short because he hasn't really spent much time on pavement until this past week (he just finished his puppy vaccinations). I'm hoping that as his sprained wrist heals he'll stop favoring that leg and with his nails now being as short as they are, that the quick will recede so that they don't look like they may bleed. I also ordered a Dremel today to grind down those other nails. Thanks again!

PS The images that I included in my post (except for the paw only pic) were before I was taking him for walks on pavement. So his nails are actually quite a bit shorter then in the they appear in three of the images.

Both of my dogs' nails...

Are at least that short. I dremel weekly (I live where there are no sidewalks). The quick will recede as the nail shortens. In my opinion, I thought the other nails looked a bit long! lol
BTW - he sure is one cute cookie!!

IMHO these nails are not TOO SHORT they are about the length tha

shown are. I always walk my dogs on the pavements to get them this short before a show and some people dremle them to get them this short or shorter. Bulldogs to be proper should not have nails that come to a point on the end and should be no loner than 1/2 in. if that.

I'm a little late to the discussion but I think his nails

are a bit "long" in the photos you referenced, and would like to see them reduced by about 1/3. When you use the dremel you are planning to purchase, remember that that instrument puts out a lot of "heat" and you only want to do one quick pass on a nail and then go on to the next one, then return to the first nail if it needs a bit more, so that the dog gets used to the "buzz" but doesn't have any pain associated with the tool...and remember to offer treats and compliments to him for being such a good boy! (and best to do this when he's sleepy too) happy.gif

Thanks for the feedback!

Thank you to everyone who responded! One thing that I should have mentioned is that the 3 of the picks that I included were prior to Hurley being able to walk on the sidewalk, so they don't show how short his middle nail has gotten. I did include one pic (paw only that was taken yesterday) that shows the wear. Regardless, it sounds like this is normal I'm actually going to buy a dremel today to shorten his other nails. Also, the more I watch him walk, the more I think the paw dragging is a result of his sprained wrist that he is getting over. It's his right front paw that is injured and that's the one that he's dragging the most. The left front paw is fine. Thanks again!

Glad you liked it, I had to write it myself, it was so hard..lol

I was like, how do I write about myself? But I tried. The bullies loved having their photos done, I wish he used different photos, the ones he used, Pugsley was looking at a dog across the street.

Rosco's back feet are like that, little nubbs,

They don't bleed and seem fine, so i haven't done anything about it yet. I am sure they will only go down so far, but keep an eye on them.

My rescue boy Cain has the same thing....

on his back legs.

With Cain though, it is due to his bad hips and knees. He also has arthritis in one of his front paws, we think from abuse and lack of vet care.

I can't say that this is the case with your puppy....but maybe the next time you take him to the vet have him check is range of motion in his front shoulders/legs to make sure. He just might be having a tough time carrying around his bully head until he grows into it! He sure is a cutie! happy.gif

Good luck with him and I hope it is nothing to worry about!
