Mason has had allergy problems all of his life and he is 5 years old now(he has been allergy tested and been on all kinds of meds and food with no help). This week he has been miserable and not eating well and not sleeping hardly any(me either of course!) He just went to the vet on saturday and she put him on clavamox because he was starting to sound congested(haven't heard that anymore).Anyways he has huge hives all over him and today they are actually starting to ooze a little. Does anyone have any ideas to what I could possibly get to help him sleep and relieve his itching some? Last night I actually gave him 2 benadryl and a predisone(yep I know thats a lot of meds but the thing is it didn't help any!) Also yesterday I gave him a bath with malaseb shampoo thinking that would help and it didnt either. His belly is red as fire and swollen feeling because he has been scratching so much. Last night I also tried putting gold bond powder on his belly and that just made him scratch even more. When I went to the store tonight I saw that claritin makes a hives medicine and was wondering if you can give bullies that and if so how much would you give if he weights 57 pounds? Anyways I would greatly appreciate any suggestions.
You could try Emu oil. It works great and there is a food supple
Will help the allergies and the skin problems

Question? Has he been on prednisone for extended
periods in his five years?

Epson Salt
I swear by the stuff.... give him a warm but not to warm bath..... 2 cups of Epson Salt for 15 minutes... try to get his whole body under water. If you have a bath with jets even better..... you want the salt to flush his skin..... try it every other day for a week.... I give my dogs a bath in it once a week... I have two bitches with inverted tails and it keeps them healthy I don't do anything else to their tails except dry them out after the bath.... I have one bitch that had skin issues... kind of sounded like what Mason had... nothing was working... I put her on Vit A, E and C which are natural antihistamines and for the immune system.... along with her regular vitamin.... and extra fish oil and I must say within one week the hives were gone and two weeks she looked good enough to take into the ring...... her coat is soft and beautiful, hardly sheds and never itchy and no hives..... I feed them Natural Balance Vegetarian Formula.....

the claritin is prob the"D" and should not be given to dogs
I would put him back in the tub, of tempid water and dump a box of baking soda in and just keep dumping it over him for 15minutes. Take him out w/o rincing and give him 3 benadryl, this will help him sleep In 8 hours give him 2 more benadryl. His dose for his weight is 60mg of benadryl, but he can have a loading dose of 75mgs. You can give him the 2 benadryl = 50mg every 8 hours for a few dasy.
1 pill of pred is not going to do much, at this point would ask the vet for an injection of Predinsone to jump start getting the hives and itching under control.
What is he eating?
Put him on a grain free food, the one that is most ready avaliable is Natural Balance, you can get it at PetCo. Many love the fish, i hate it and it made my dogs itchy. I would go with the Natural Balance Venison and Sweat potatoe. It will take a good month to see a huge change, 1 thing to remember is that it will get worse before it gets better.
No treats or snacks, just give him a bit of food for a snack if he needs a treat.
hope he is feeling better soon.
