Spina Bifida Question....

Are there obvious physical signes of spina bifida? I have only seen SB pups with diapers on...and I also know that there are varying degrees of SB. I appreciate any info on this....thank you...

there are many Bulldogs with a dimple

and if you want more info you need to do xrays. Hemivertebreas can also cause dimples as well. And they can mimic similar sign of SB.
We have had a few SB dogs come into rescue with the same signs as SB only to have MRI confirm hemi. If the Hemi is in a spot that pinches nerves that damage the genitourinary and digestive tract, then symptoms are identical to SB. Hemis that cause these problems can be corrected surgially with a 50% chance. Unfortuanlty most dont do it because it starts at 10 grand.

Got one with a dimple but no SB

Our girl is 7 years old now. She has a very noticeable dimple. We did x rays and the vet saw no signs of SB. She does have some hemivertabres. I had her spayed just because I believe she might have been a carrier. She has never had any bowel or bladder problems.

You cant see hers....

but you can definitely feel it....thats why I never noticed it before I was poking at her "cows lick" and it immediately freaked me out...I am calmer now and we will have the vet check it...but she knows when she has to go potty...she goes to the door...she always squats...she does have accidents but they are typically close to the door...and she has no problems getting around at all...we often joke that she has ADHD, she bounces off the walls and the furniture and she is inches away from being able to jump on the couch...she tries a million times a day LOL

Isabella had a noticeable indent at 3 weeks according to.

the breeders vet. My vet saw her for the first time at 5 weeks old and it was very defined at that time.

Sometimes a dimple is just a dimple

You should probably have an xray made of her spine just in case but it doesn't sound like SB. Do a search on this site for dimple and you will get a lot of responses. Good luck with that sweet baby.

Shan

RELAX and enjoy that beautiful puppy. I thought I felt a dimple on Q, too (when he was a pup). He's perfectly fine.
I would bring it to your vet's attention next time you go in. That's what I did, and my vet told me it was nothing.

So...if there is a dimple....

But NO signs of any issues....what would you do next? Xrays? If there are no signs, is it possible the pup could have a "normal" life? Or does their health gradually change?

I am absolutely freaking out....Echo has always had this little swirly of fur above her tail with a little dark patch of fur, I mean tiny...I had never messed with it before...today I was telling her how cute it was and I poked it and there is a dent there. She is absolutely acting fine...never any issues...she runs and jumps, I mean JUMPS like no pup I have ever seen....she is almost 4 mos old.

What should I do?????

Yes, Rottie is right.

In the absence of neurological symptoms, there is almost, but not always, a dimple or space between the vertebrae just before the start of the tail bone. In Isabella her dimple was very pronounced and visible.

In the absence of neurological symptoms...

I read that a dimple in the lower back (caudal region) can be a degree of suspicion. X-ray would confirm diagnosis.

about 3-4 weeks

some earlier, you might notice a puppy younger is wet all the time, and they might have a rash on the belly. they may or may not use their back legs.

Many will just have poop oozing out. Normal puppies when you potty them for the most part you can see them pushing and grunting when they poo. SB puppies will not do this, they are not easy to potty.
