Something to chew on...

Okay I have been wanting to ask this question for a very very long time but I dont want it to be taken out of context...... I did a year and a half of research on Bully's before we purchased our Abby in Jan. of this year I read on numerous places and in books........DO NOT GIVE BULLY'S RAWHIDE OR ANYTHING LIKE IT! My question is what do you give them to naw on I have tried the nyla bones and she does NOT like them! My Yorkie LOVEs Rawhide type bones she lives for them! but I have to keep the girls seperated when I give my yorkie one. I totally understand and dont want to take the Choking risk's with rawhide or anything compairable but I know abby would LOVE something like that to chew on there have been a coupe occasion's where Izzy has jumped over the gate keeping them appart and Abby has stolen her bone just for us to jump up and chase her around haha because she wants it sooooo bad! I have tried numerous other things but she just eats them like they are candy in 2 seconds... Is there anything that you guys can suggest that wont pose the choking hazards of Rawhide??

Thanks for Listening!

Dawn and Abby!

I have seen these at my local Publix they come from there meat d

I am going to check this out this week..... and Oh what is another mess haha I have two kids and two dogs and a guinea pig and a tank full of fish... so what his one more thing to clean up! OH AND A HUSBAND! (think he makes the bigger messes!) :} thanks!!

I give the natural white bones

that either come filled or not filled and then fill them with peanut butter, canned spray cheese or the filling Kong's sell....even baby food meat works...keeps them busy esp in crate...I have experimented with all the different nylabones b/c some they seem to like...they like the gummabone type in wolf or super size in flavors or for some reason the t'bone...looks like sling shot...seem to like the shape and the way they can get at it ...
good luck...never rawhide or pigs ears unless you both supervise and don't mind getting your hand down their throats to retrieve yucky slimy goopy stuff that they gulp down, then spit up and then try to beat you to grabbing it so they can try to swallow it again.
Am I the only one with disgusting bulldogs like that???? That happened when someone brought them rawhides...and they were huge...got off those ends and were gross in no time...never more!!! Don't like the bones that are big ones that are smoked as mine still break off pieces and gag on it. sad.gif

My dogs get beef marrow bones

sounds like the same bone you are talking about. I do boil them for a few minutes to get the marrow out of them, too rich for my dogs. We've never had a problem with the bones chipping/splintering. We re-use them by soaking their food in water and stuffing the bone, keeps the dogs occupied for a long time. You can also put peanut butter, cheez whiz, liverwurst etc., inside of them.

Good luck

If you're willing to supervise

and hold it for her, you could give a bully stick. Just like anything else it HAS to be supervised. They can be choked on (when they get 2" - 3" we take them away), but they are totally digestable. We get the 3 foot long ones and they last atleast a week, if not 2.

Hug your bulldog every day.

Raw hide.... nylabones...

I bought two different kinds of nylabone and she didnt like them at all.. I only give our Yorkie the small chew sticks and she eats them at my feet. I have noticed at Publix they have bones from the butcher that come from there meet department I have never really looked at them because I have always been skeptical of giving bones... I just know she wants them sooooo bad! and would love to find something she would like that wont be gone in 2 mins. So if the bones are uncooked at publix this might be okay? sorry I just dont want anything to happy to our baby girl!

Thanks

Bones!

Try the knuckle bones! I get them fromhttp://whitedogbone.com/ but raw bones are supposed to be better. My bullies love them. They last long and keep them busy for a long time. As with all toys/bones, supervision is required, and I discard them when they look like they are getting too small for safety.

Usually when they chew off the end of a nylabone it is the kind

eatable not the original hard galileo or the ones made that are indestructable.

I give mine rawhide - supervised

I give my 9.5 month old rawhides all of the time but do supervise her. When I see a piece fraying etc. I simply cut it off etc. There are a few brands that she can't simply break apart it seems, wich I remembered the name because I get really mixes results and some go right into the trash.

She loves them and had the same issue hates nylabones etc.

I have not seen Kong bones but will give them a try based upon some of the suggestions.

Some people give uncooked bones

I give mine kongs. I would be scared to give any dog a rawhide. Years ago my Mom's PomPoo almost choked on a rawhide.

A few more suggestions...

We use an UNCOOKED "soup bone" (or shank, I believe the butcher calls it) purchased from a butcher. It is usually about 4 - 6 inches long. It comes with some meat on, but it is very easy to cut that off (it helps to freeze it slightly first), leaving just enough sinew for your bully to have a blast. After they chew that off (in about 5 minutes) it leaves a very clean bone for chewing. We also remove the marrow before giving it to Roxy. These bones, uncooked, will not splinter.

If you look back through the posts you will find one where someone's bully chewed the end off a nylabone and ended up requiring surgery. Unfortunately I can't remember who that was. sad.gif At any rate, you would probably want to supervise your dog with a nylabone.

Good luck!

Have a Great Day!

Re: Something to chew on...

Kong bones work great, or anything that Kong makes. My Bullies like the ropes also. That's about all I can find that they don't tear apart. Hope that works
