I got my English Bulldog when he was eight weeks old and since the day we have gotten him we have been finding out more and more health problems. It started off with a heart murmer. Then the heart murmer got worse and we had to bring Biggie to the cardiologist, he has a heart problem that was the worse of the three and if it gets any worse than he will die by the time he is three years old. Then recently we found out that he is anemic and we have to give him an iron supplement every day. I don't know what to do, I am assuming that he was from a puppy mill and it makes me sick. I love this dog to death and I am so scard that he won't be able to live a normal life.
Tina is correct-I forgot about this...when we got Tequila
he had to be health certified before he could leave the state. He couldn't be picked up before 8 weeks old. Tequila's breeder is in Boca Raton.

Vet visit
Heather,
Did you get anything at all in writing about taking this pup to a vet within so many days and if there was a problem, you could return the pup??? At what visit did the vet discover the murmur? Did you go see him in person before getting him? Guess at this point, it does not matter since it has been months since his first vet appointment. I would do what the others are telling you, go to the person you purchased the pup from and ask for some sort of compensation. I am sorry you are going thru this.

Re: I don't think you know the breeder correct??....
The breeder is advoiding us, they even changed their phone number(but we found out the new one)! I want to call animal services but I do not know how to go about that and I hear that they take every puppy away except a male and a female. They must have known that he had a heart conditon because the cadiologist said it is passed down from mother and father.

no not normal the dog should be
Checked for worms. If worms go untreated it can lead to anemia. I would add liver to the food and are what dose of slow fe the vet suggests. Vicky
Vicky, Bosco, Bella, Breve' & Holly

I don't think you know the breeder correct??....
I am guessing that since you are assuming that he came from a puppy mill you purchased from a pet store or some internet site? In that case then you are not going to know the "breeder" and if I were you, I would go back to the pet store or wherever you got him and ask for some sort of compensation because they sold you a puppy with a heart condition. Did you get any sort of guarantee?? Unfortunately, if you don't have any sort of guarantee or "warranty" from wherever you may have gotten him, you may be out of luck. I am so sorry you are having to go through this. Do you have a bulldog vet that you see? I strongly recommend this, you can find a list on the home page of this site. This will allow you to have the peace of mind that the vet knows what he is doing and is not charging you for useless things.
This is a breed where research is key. Due to all the puppy mills, BYB's, etc. finding a quality puppy from a reputable breeder is of utmost importance. Plus, by purchasing at pet stores, etc. it just keeps the puppy mills in business. Your Biggie is just adorable and I am sorry he has health problems. But take this as a learning experience, the next bulldog puppy you get (notice I am saying the next one because they are completely addicting), you will have a better understanding of the breed and know where to find a quality puppy.
So, again, if I were you, I would be going back to where you got the puppy from and asking for some compensation because they sold you a sick puppy. Best of luck to you.

It should not be normal for a puppy to be anemic. But if you don't feel comfortable with the vet find a new one. Where do you live? I'm sure someone on this board can help you find a great vet who is knowledgeble about Bulldogs.

Re: Ok.. someone help me here... It is normal for puppies to be
Biggie is like 1 point away from not being anemic, his gums are like a pale pinkish color when the iron supplement runs out and when he has it his gums are bright red. The vet said (who I am changing since she is not a bulldog vet) that if the iron supplement doesn't work then they are going to do a blood clotting test on him and then a millon other tests... I don't know about this vet.

Wow, even changed their number!!
Well, I am guessing you aren't the only one they sold a sick puppy to since they changed their number. It sure sounds like they are trying to hide from somebody. Do you know anyone else who got a puppy from them? I agree with Sue, I would try to get something from your vet and contact an attorney. Perhaps even just have the attorney write them a letter and try to "scare" them to get in contact with you and maybe you can work something out without going to court. Good luck and please keep us posted!!

I am so sorry you are having problems with your precious little guy. Have you contacted the breeder about his heart problems?? What did the breeder say? Were you not told that he had a "murmur" before you purchased him? Did you get any health guarantee?

Re: I don't think you know the breeder correct??....
Now I am def going to get a bulldog vet, because I have always had the feeling that the vet for my mini dauchaund was not right. The vet seems clueless when it comes to Biggie.

You should get a letter from your vet....
on his letter head that says the pup "is not fit for sale" due to his severe heart condition.
If the breeder is ignoring you then you can go to small claims court with the vet's letter & sue him for court costs, what you paid for the puppy and related medical bills.
Good luck,
Sue

What state do you live in?
Some states have Lemon Laws that address puppies sold in poor health.
Was the puppy bred in the same state where you live? Did you buy him in the same state where you live? If you Google puppy and Lemon Law, you might find information for your area. Usually the state Attorney General's office handles reports of puppies that were sold in poor health.
It's a long shot, but if you paid with a credit card, you may have some protection there, too, for buying a product that may have been misrepresented.
