salmon oil

We have had a few people in our area that purchased the salmon oil for dogs at Costco. A few weeks after using it the coats went to crap, the dogs started itching and looking moth eaten. A few of us locally put it together and stopped using it and the coats got better. The other day we were at the vet after a c-section and talking with the vet during recovery and we started talking about the coats and if he had seen any problems with the salmon oil. He said YES, the salmon used is hatchery salmon had has more metals in it vs. wild, he had a lab run some tests and the levels were way high and he also contributed the bad coats to the oil.

So if you are having coat issues and using salmon oil that is not WILD you might stop and see if it makes a difference with your coats.

What about extra virgin olive oil?

My vet told us to put about a teaspoon of extra virgin olive oil on our 8 year old Spanky's food every day. I am wondering if that could be why he has lost some of the fur on his back?

We give salmon oil because of its Omega 3 content

which helps immune system and provides a boost to the shine of the fur. If your old dog's fur is dry and dull then fish oil may help him more than olive oil. Has your vet ever mentioned a check of his thyroid? Its a blood test, and a thin and dry coat is one of the signs along with weight gain and overall sluggish behavior.
