Question regarding RIMADYL

My boy Jeter is on Rimadyl (sp?) for the next two weeks and I've noticed that his eating habits are no longer existant! Should I be worried or is this just a side affect to the medication? What can I do to get him eating at least a little bit.

Also, what other side affects should I be on the look out for and be worried about. I've read regarding the hazard to their livers if they're older, but he's only 2 years of age.

I appreciate the advice in advance!!!

Diana, Mattingly and Jeter

****THANK YOU EVERYONE!****

I've spoken to my vet and she's told me to take him off of it immediately and put him on a chicken/rice bland diet for the next few days in order to get his insides back in order. He'll just have to deal with the pain for the time being which should be fine because he hasn't wimpered or cried at all the first day I noticed he wasn't up to par. The meds were just an added bonus. He's also on 10 mg of Pepcid AC 2x a day. I asked about the Metacam and she said that they're basically the same time of med so I'd be going through the same issues with that too. So we're going to lay away from meds from the time being and hope that rest and time is what he needs.

I again, appreciate everyone's insight and info, wouldn't have known where to start without you guys!

THANKS! happy.gif

Some dogs do fine on Rimadyl but...

Chester had head shakes after his first dose, never had them before or after (I stopped it right away). And one of our other guys had vomiting after. I'm not a fan of rimadyl either.

thier are better and safer pain meds.....

i cannot speak enough about metacam...it is a blessing....thier are no steroids....even thou your dog is young the long term down the road...their could be damage....also as a person posted you should always use pepcid when giving rimadyl...rimadyl gives them a acid tummy....but truely ask your vet about metacam.....

It can cause stomach upset...

I would give your vet a call. He may just recommend starting pepcid as long as the dog is on the rimadyl.

Re: Question regarding RIMADYL

I would go online and google the medication and read about all the side effects. Every medication affects dogs differently. I have used the medication in the past with no problems and also know people that have used it with terrible side effects. If you are concerned you can also call your vet who prescribed the medication and ask them.

My dogs have done fine on Rimadyl

No problems here. But, I would talk to the Vet and possibly get a different type of pain med.

BTW

I always have a discussion with my vet about the choice of medication (and the reason) You should have at least been told what side effects to look for. There is tons of info here on Rimadyl if you do a search.

my boy has done well on it

he was on Rimadyl for 9 months last year after knee surgery and blood work remained just fine. He is back on it temporarily because of a shoulder injury. He cannot tolerate Metacam, gives him the squirts really bad. All dogs react differently to medication so one is not necessarily bad for all.
