I have not had Rolands nares done. I am a watch and wait person when it come to young puppies. his head is still very small and has alot of maturing to do. So i am going to see how it all plays out. one side was horrible and it has opened up alot since he was 12 weeks. Time will tell.

the reason we had this done is b/c I mentioned to the vet that he sounded like he had sleep apnea. He would stop breathing at night (just for a few seconds), then struggle for breath and start breathing normally. That has not happened since he had his surgery.

(as far as I know). He had to wear a cone to keep from scratching at it or bumping it on stuff as it healed. His nostrils are much more wide open now and he is getting a lot more air. I haven't noticed a change in energy... mostly because he is only 8 months old and never sits still . I don't have a good before picture of what his nose looked like (none really show the detail you would need), but I will try to post an after picture sometime soon. It's hard to tell on the picture you posted- but that might just be my computer screen.

...as I have questions on it.
For those of you that have had dogs with stenotic nares, what symptoms did you notice? Did your dogs mouth breathe, and if so was it all the time? Were these apneic episodes regular (every time the dog slept deeply)?
Roxy will be spayed next month and I am wondering about possibly having the nares done at the same time. I don't feel like it is a big issue for her right now, but I get the feeling it will be down the road. And it would obviously be better to do it all at once, and reduce the number of surgeries requiring general anesthetic, correct?
The reason I have concerns about Roxy: 1. Her nostrils look on the narrow side. 2. She definitely stops breathing regularly when she sleeps.
On the other hand, her snoring is not bad to average I would say, and she does not really mouth breath all that often.
Due to my location the vet we have now is not all that experienced with bulldogs. I currently am tracking down a more experienced one, and will have that done before any surgery takes place, obviously. But in the meantime, I would like to hear some opnions from some of you.

they stiched the outside of the nose and it was not difficult to stich ? i assume their was a big improvement in not only breathing but his energy level also...also did they have sleep apnea because of the nares being to small?? and did this fix it...

Ajax had surgery on both nares on August 13th. We had it done at the same time as his neuter and cherry eye surgery. We also had him microchipped. We had noticed that he would sometimes struggle for breath when sleeping. We mentioned that to our vet, who is a bulldog specialist, and he showed us that one of Ajax's nares was almost completely pinched shut and the other one was fairly narrow. He said that when they are really narrow like that, they can put a lot of pressure on the throat and the palate. We did not have the palate trimmed because the vet doesn't think he needs it at this point. The procedure was not very invasive- it was laser surgery. The recovery went pretty well. He didn't seem to have a lot of pain (although he was on tramadol for a week or so afterward). We were supposed to take him back a week afterward for a follow up and two weeks after the surgery to get the stitches out. At the one week follow up, they were able to take some of the stitches out. They took the rest out at the 2 week appt. He had a little bit of scabbing, but the scabs have come off and are healing. His nose looks great! I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions for us. I do not have a veterinary background and am by no means an expert, but we have gone through this pretty recently with our dog.

actaully minor surgery and often done along with elongated palates, tonsil removals, etc. They have a few ways of doing it, most clip the nares from the outsides and stitch them open to allow a greater exchange of air. Problem with stenotic nares is it can also be internally. Opening the nares on the outside if they are also narrowed on the inside- doesnt really improve airflow unless the actuall passages are opened. (this is a more complicated procedure)
Can she tell if her dog need it? The nares shoukd be well rounded and open, large nostrils, not slits. Often dogs with stenotic nares make alot of noise through their nose when breathing and if really bad you can see the actuall nare pull in and out during gas exchange.

they stiched the outside of the nose and it was not difficult to stich ? i assume their was a big improvement in not only breathing but his energy level also...also did they have sleep apnea because of the nares being to small?? and did this fix it...

We just had this done...
I do not have a veterinary background and am by no means an expert, but we have gone through this pretty recently with our dog.

yes no biggie
actaully minor surgery and often done along with elongated palates, tonsil removals, etc.
