When using fresh chilled semen and progesterone testing, how many times do you normally breed? I was thinking of twice, a day a part. Does anyone do something different?
I have read that at 2.5 ng ovulation should occur within 24-48 hours. But to wait to breed 48 hours after the 5ng mark. Is that your understanding?
Here's my plan:
day -1 = 2.5ng (let stud owner know aproximate date of breeding)
day 0
day 1 = 5ng 0vulation
day 2
day 3 = breed
day 4
day 5 = breed again
I am using fresh chilled semen, and I assume with extender. This is my first attempt at breeding so I really want to get is right. I know the stud owner only breeds one day on her bitches.
Thanks
Heather
ovulation is at 5ng
then you breed 48hrs post ovulation, i breed the next day and then skip a day and breed again if i have fresh. If shipping i do as you are doing.

Re: progesterone and breeding
I went to Yorba Regional to see Dr Becky thier Reproductive specialist and this is what they use for breeding-
1.0 or less- your dog is still very early in season, recheck in 2 days
1.0-2.0- your dog is getting closer, check every other day- most dogs are normally ready in the next 5 days from this level.
2.0-5.0- if ordering fresh chilled semen, its time to order it when progesterone is ABOVE 5ng, since it may not come for 24-48 hours.
5.0-10ng- your dog will be ready to breed in a couple of days. We usaully start breeding the day after is goes over 10ng.
15-25ng- this is the prime time to breed. Dog has ovulated and eggs are usually mature at this point.
25-45- your dog can still get pregnant but you can not afford to wait any long- you may need to do a surgical implant if you are running out of time.
above 45ng- your dog may still concieve but your best time to breed has passed- may have a smaller litter size..
So if using chilled its best to wait until 15-25ng and then skip a day inbetween. The reason Yorba waits is because they are letting the eggs mature. Ovulation usually occurs at 5ng but it still can take another 36-48 hours for the eggs to mature. So if your semen quality is low then you may not get as good of results if the semen is bypassing eggs that are not mature.
I hope this helps.
Ideally you want to know when ovulation occurs so you want to see as close to 5ng as possible..but you also want to see a rise above 5ng to confirm that the bitch did indeed rise and ovulate and not stall.
I have a staller..she rises slower and from what I have read from different reserach studies, this is often in correlation with bitches who release fewer eggs. Dr Huthchin says if a bitch takes more than a few days to get from 2-3ng to 5 then its likely she is releasing fewer eggs. I am not sure if this 100% true. I will let ya know though. LOL! Last time she had a singleton, had 3 pups on day 37 but aborted them at day 48 except the one. So praying this time we have better success.
