when pregnancy is confirmed. I add 1/4 pound beef OR chicken OR liver a day OR one hard boiled egg.

giving small amount of lasix to mom towards the end like every other day or something...I've had my share of water pups but never tried lasix on mom before litter...don't remember where I read it or dosage...sorry.

Rhiann, thanks again for your response. This is a 1st time mother, no history of water pups with her. Same stud though that produced 2 water puppy litters with my other bitch. Don't know if it's him /her or them together. Vet advised me to try him with another bitch and her with another stud and see. I have not had confirmation of water puppies on her at this stage. I'm observing the shiney crepe paper look to the back 2 nipples is all. Maybe I'm just being paranoid, but I'd rather be proactive than complacent. You understand right ? I'm thinking along the lines of .....feeding her as low a sodium diet ( I know now it's impossible nor healthy to be totally sodium free) as I can won't hurt or hinder , but may help if water puppies are there.
I was interested in others experiences and the outcomes. I would love to hear also what you learn from the University .

Thanks for your response Jessica. I have an apt.for an ultrasound Monday.This vet is a reproductive specialist , so I'm hopeful for a favorable outcome this time. I've been cooking everything for her myself. Didn't feel comfortable doing the raw. She's eating very well 4 /5 times a day of boiled chicken and meatballs with a little pasta. especially in dog foods. There is no commerical dg food that i am aware of that has no sodium. It just isnt possible. ALMOST EVERYTHING we eat contains sodium in some form weather natural or not. Sodium is an important electrolyte and is essential to normal development and helping the body protect itself from infections. This applies to dogs as well. Sodium works right along with potassium. It your worried about her diet containing too much sodium then you can increase the potassium intake.
Give the history your reporting I honesty wouldnt be convinced your water puppies are coming from excessive sodium. Sounds like it may be more of a genetic problem or a problem with the bitch. Do you do full blood panelse pre pregnancy? If so what is her sodium levels? Potassium levels prepregnancy? Have you also done one during pregnancy to see if her levels are elevated?

I know alot of people here are paranoid about sodium and water puppies and i have been doing alot of reserach, consulting with vets etc. I will make my own decison in the end..but so far i am finding that its very rare that a dog gets too much sodium in her diet if the dog is left just on kibble. It seems that when bitches get picky most of s start supplimenting the kible for otherfoods such as eggs, pasta, boiled chicken etc..Homecooking for the dogs can be hard to manage if your trying to watch your sodium intake. So you need to get a food guide on low sodium foods if thats what your resorting to i guess. I have an email out to a nutritionist at UC Davis so i will let ya know what they say..

I know this is not the highest rated food but about 6 months ago we had a litter and I did extensive research for the lowest amount of salt in dog foods and my conclusion is that Canidae all life stages formula and one of the Merrick dry foods, I just don't remember which variety, were the lowest. Canidae was .22% and Merick was around .20%, not that there is are not a lower one out there but this was a low as I could find without using a prescription foods that had the analysis of cardboard. I know alot of people had trouble or just switched from Canidae when they changed the formula, but my dogs never experienced any problems with Canidae so that was the one that I feed my bitch along with 1/2 a prenatal vitamin, folic acid, and cranberry tablets the last 2 weeks. We had no problems and had a litter of 2 healthy puppies.

Is there anything anywhere with no sodium anymore ? I know she needs some sodium, but how do we know exactly how much is too much ? I will look into that, maybe see just how quickly I could get it here. Since this afternoon, I've given her 2 boiled eggs( didn't know to limit them) and 3 raw skinless boneless chicken breasts over 3 meals. I'm trying to feed her 4 smaller meals rather than her usual 2 larger ones.I went shopping tonight and bought steak and ground beef for the next couple of days. I'm very scared to be feeding raw though.I guess I'm just not confident that she's getting all she needs this way.We have another US scheduled for next Tuesday,hopefully we'll see a little of what we're dealing with then.Thanks again.

I dont beleive in elminating all sodium because its neccesary for a proper diet but does need to be moderated especially in a bitch who has been known to have water pups..
