new pupies

I would like to know if anyone out there has ever had a puppie that was eating by the mother? We just had pups yesturday and i was sleeping right by them and did not hear anything. So I don't know if the pup was sick and just died or what but we could not find the puppy anywhere the mother can not take them out of this area and we looked every where our only conclusion is that she ate it. but we have 5 other beautiful puppies that are doing well.

Re: new pupies

Never ever leave those babies with mom without supervision. I've heard of moms eating their own but mine have never had the chance to do it because they are never alone left with her.

Moms can accidentally lay on their babies too. I've heard of 3 and 4 week old pups being squashed to death. Keep those precious babies safe.

Get a big long see thru plastic tote and put an electric heating pad in the bottom at one end. Set it on low (make sure you don't use one that shuts off automatically after a certain amount of time) and put a light blanket or towel over it. Be sure to keep out drafts which will chill the pups and kill them. I drill holes in the lid for ventilation.

Puppies

I am so sorry to hear about the puppy sad.gif

In talking with a few great breeders they all agree on one thing .....never leave bulldog puppies with mom unattended . That means making a incubator for the pups and putting them on the mom every 2-3 hrs to feed and let her potty them and then back in the incubator they go . Some breeders have told me that they never get to a point where they leave the puppies with mom unattended.

had one rotty mom do it.....

had to keep her muzzled any time she was with the puppies...we made the mistake thinking once their eyes were open she would not eat them....wrong...none of her girls ever had that habit...so it wasnt passed on....i think its a personal thing....and she was the only bitch that ever did it in my 25 years of breeding rotties....

Re: pups

It is not common (or normal) for a dam to eat their whelps, but it happens with Dobes and Rotties more than most other breeds.
Agree with the other posters to separate Mom from the pups when you can't supervise. Most of my bitches find the puppy room too hot to stay in for longer than it takes to nurse and clean the pups anyway.

no I have not

But I never leave mom with pups until pups eyes are open-mom is well out of the anesthesia and she knows the babies are hers. I would not leave the pups with her again unless you are awake. While you are sleeping I would put the pups up in a safe warm place where mom can't get them. Good luck.
