Leaving your dog home

How long is too long to leave your dog home alone?

If you want to avoid a accident

A dog can hold it only one hour per month of age.. some however can go longer and some shorter.. Working parents typically will leave their adult dogs 6-10 hours.. I leave lola 3 days week from 6am-4pm but she is let out for a potty break. She has the whole house so I don't feel that bad but I almost never leave her for more than 4 hours when I am off.. I'd rather be home with her anyway
Hope this helps

Depends on the dog

and their age. Mine have been left for as long as 10 hours. Right now they are only alone for about 4 hours 4 days a week.

Dogs who get to potty after eating breakfast should

sleep most of the day while owners are away/working if they are about one year or older. With youngsters, if you cannot get someone over to safely let the dog out midday, then you need to make some other arrangements (like using pee pads and confining the dog to kitchen, perhaps) that will eventually "train the dog" on how to handle its needs when you are gone. If you keep a youngster kenneled beyond the time he can hold his waste, he is learning to mess his crate...a bad habit that may be very difficult to train-away later...and can lead to other health issues like "urine skin burn" or GI problems from ingesting poop. sad.gif
