I have read alot about infected tails recently and now for the last 6 or 7 weeks we have been fighting a tail infection. We have been in and out of the vets, had it cultured and found out that it was resistant to almost every antibiotic except Clavamox, and for cost reason we switched to the generic brand of Augmentin, which is the human equivalent. It is better than before the drugs but still not good. I am not against having the tail amputated but I am looking to see if I can avoid it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

HI...I have used...
ear powder after cleaning out tail pocket but good which may take a few hours as they won't come near you b/c it hurts to clean it out....I start with baby wipes, then use a bit of peroxide on baby wipe...then dry soft baby washclothes to dry as best I can and get rest of hair out...then get the ear powder with long nose and blast in the pocket with that...try to find powder that kills yeast in ears too. That has always cleared it up...Haley had that occasionally and Merlot had it once. Yucky smelling too...

flushing it with Epson or Sea Salt everyday? I have two dogs with inverted tails and when I got both of them they had rotten flesh smell coming from their tail pockets. So I started with the Epson Salt flush and within two weeks they were better. Now I keep them healthy by flushing them with Epson Salt once a week. I use a 60cc syringe with a cut off feeding tube that I can insert into the pocket and I flush it with three syringes full of the Epson Salt mixture. I wait 10 minutes before I dry it out with q-tips. I mix 16 oz of warm water with 1 teaspoon of Epson salt. Then once a week my dogs get an Epson Salt soak for 15 minutes and while they are soaking I make sure the tail is underwater and getting flushed. So far no problems or infections..... Ask your vet and see what he thinks.... just my experience with inverted tails.......

some times tail pockets are....
frustrating to get cleaned up....i found when cleaning its better to do it twice a day rather than one rough cleaning....i use witch hazel which does not sting and dries the pocket out...then i put some panalog in their...this is a antibotic....i would suggest feeding your guy some yogurt....a vit e tab or i like cod liver pill...and some vit c to his diet...i dont use oral antibotics as it seems to make matters worse...also go grain free alot of yeast in ears and tails and ropes are caused by food allergies....
also you might want to pack the pocket with cotton balls...they have to be removed twice a day...this helps keep it dry....also pack the pocket before bathing.....

you could try
either gently wiping with Malaseb pledgetts or even using Epi Otic or Nolvasan ear wash cleansers on cotton balls. Both have ingredients to stop, moisture, yeast and bacteria. That, along with the a/b, could give relief and clear it up.
Years ago, my Sumo had a bad inverted tail that stuck in about 1 inch into his backside. Chronic infection, odor and hair loss and nothing I did helped. He was miserable. I finally had it removed when he was 2 1/2 and he was a changed dog - so happy that nasty tail was gone. Surgery should always be a last resort when all else fails. You haven't had the problem for long so hopefully the a/b and other topicals can help.
I would be careful about applying Gold Bond powder though, cuz it can get all cakey and gunked up, making cleaning harder and more irritating.
Hope everything works out. You may want to search this forum for a post by Melanie Trichler on this. She wrote a great short article about her experience with tail amputation and it's worth the read.
Good luck
