Emma is nursing 19 day old puppies and lately she has been having terrible runny nose. Tonight while nursing she couldn't breath thru nose it was so congested, she sat up real fast and was trying to breath, clear mucus flying everywhere. I started the vaporiser and added vicks, but she was miserable, nose is both running clear and yet very stuffy. I was really getting worried, so without thinking I gave her a benadryl. It has really helped and she is now sleeping and breathing is much easier.
As i lay here listening to her sleep , I suddenly realized benadryl might not be good for pups, so i got online and checked and sure enough, everything on bdw says wait 24 hours before she can nurse again. Is me having to bottle feed for the next 24 hours going to mess with her milk supply, she has enough trouble the way it is producing milk.
How much milk should i expect each puppy to drink? they nurse about every 3 hours.
I am so mad at myself for giving her the benadryl.
I don't know about nursing puppies...
But you may just have saved your girl's life. Airway and breathing are always the first thing healthcare providers treat. Don't beat yourself up. Hope the pups are OK!

thank you!
To everyone who emailed and those who checked with their vets, a million thanks. We went in to vet first thing this morning, and Emma's lungs are clear and blood count looked ok, only slightly elevated, showing inflamation. They said she has a horrible allergy attack, one of the worse they've seen, which has turned into secondary upper respitory. Vet said I did the right thing giving her the benadryl. She is home with antibiotic and anthistimine and resting comfortably right now. How quickly she went from having clear drainage to white bubbles and gasping for air. The puppies nursed this morning and then slept 5 1/2 hours, effects of the benadryl. Vet said to let them sleep, so I did. Emma and I slept too. I never want to go down this path again...
