Has anyone had a dog with severe scarring of the cornea?

If so, what treatments did you use and was the vision restored? Bella has severe scarring due to dry eye and we are currently using tacrolimus, an eye wash, and a surgical eye lubricant. We go back to the Opthamologist next month for a check-up and he may add a fourth medicine.

I have only had Bella for about 3 weeks

She is a rescue and has probably had dry eye for several years. I know nothing about her background. My regular Vet put her on the cyclosporin and the Opthamologist took her off and put her on Tacrolimus. I guess he feels it works better than the cyclosporin.

She was on cyclosporin

But the Opthamologist took her off of it today. He put her on Tacrolimus.

I have had the cross hatching done in the past...

but, is the dry eye being treated properly? after the cross hatching they can put a human Bosch and LOmb lens to get the first intention healing to happen and then, when that comes off, she will need a 'protective collar' on so she cannot rub it.

CYCLOSPORINE is an anti cancer, rejection drug that will stimulate the auxillary tear ducts to produce tears for her. She will need to be on this for the rest of her life to treat the dry eye.

I think they are finally on the road to recovery

But it's been tough.

Now that I think about it, he may have said

Severe pigmentation of the cornea instead of severe scarring. I know they don't sound alike but I had a lot to take in. Just trying to get a handle on all the meds and trying to remember all the questions I wanted to ask. I have been under so much stress this past week trying to work and care for 4 sick bulldogs.

But anyway, I know he mentioned some scarring but I believe it was the pigmentation of the cornea that was the major thing that was caused by the dry eye.

I hope there is something that can be done to make her feel better, I imagine it can be annoying and hurt

sorry

TMK the only "treatments" available are to 1)halt progression of the problem and 2)to keep the eye comfortable and free from infection. Corneal transplants are done on humans but I dont believe they are offered for canines.
