Harvey is haveing breathing difficulties

Harvey is a rescue who came through a shelter and was in horrible condition. He has improved so much. We have him in a forever foster home and I recieved this email fro them this morning. I am thinking about sending him to a specialist. Any thoughts?

Harvey is having problems.I rushed him to the vet this morning - he was turning blue and struggling for air. I got there in time and they gave him oxygen and albuterol. After he was breathingbetter, they took a bloodtest - i had cut his thyroid med to one tablet and the test read normal - therapeutic dosage to be 1.7. He had been getting much peppier and even lifted his leg to pee outside instead of squatting. He would bark at Tim until he gave him a treat, then bark until he got water, then again to go out and once more to have his bed fluffed and a cover. He had one other episode of tongue turning blue after his bath several days ago but Tim grabbed him up and he started breathing normally again. I have an inhaler now and abuterol tablets -he doesn't want any food yet -it was a rough day for all of us. I have him in the bedroom next to me, inhaler on nightstand and am monitoring him - room is air-conditioned. Vet said it could be a combination of respiratory and heart. Pray for him - I'm doing everything I can -will probably stay up all night to watch. He's had a tablet and one shot of the inhaler and seems to be breathing better but can't move around without heavy panting. Will keep you informed. He was getting delightfully funny before this. ..with his demands and barking. Anita

I would have him seen...

By a cardiologist. The inhaler and pills will relax the breathing passages (allowing them to open a bit more) and may speed up the heart rate a tad. If he's still having breathing issues, I would suspect heart involvement. Let us know what happens.

That was my thought as well.

Sadly, it can manifest itself in a short period of time. Not much warning sometimes in these guys. My aged Cocker Spaniel went from fine to full congestive heart failure in a month.
