good shampoo for itchy skin/losing fur/ yeasty?

I am having a problem with 2 itchy dogs right now... kibby is slowly switching food, and i hope that will help. she is white, but looks like she is turning pink, rusty in her wrinkles, and biting her knees... she is also recovering from her uti.

my cattledog mix gabby is 12 and was doing well on her wellness senior until recently... now she is itchy , and is losing patches of fur on her sides and chest in the last month and half. i was thinking that maybe since she licks kibbys bowl after they eat and share water, maybe gabby was allergic to kibbys old dogfood too? then i thought maybe its just because she is getting old, that she is losing hair? maybe she is starting to grow allergic to her senior food.... i don't know...

i haven't changed anything else since i got them, and use all organic surface cleaners, and i double rinse everything with hot water to be sure that there are as little traces of chemical anything around them. vet scraped/tested them for ring worm and everything (vet said allergy testing doesn't show anything and is not worth it), everything came back negative.

anyways, the vet put them on chlorhexidine shampoo, 2xwk for 3 weeks... but we stopped after the 2nd week because the dogs seemed to be getting itchier...i feel really bad for them.

i am going to try to give them some benadryl to relieve the itchiness,.... but is there any miracle shampoo out there that will soothe them? it seems like the chlorhexidine really irritated my senior dog.

they are also obsessive paw lickers so i would prefer not to use a conditioner if possible.

calm coat? tea tree oil? oatmeal? botanical? organic? black tea on the hot spots? there are soo many to choose from! prior to this they were just using mango tango, or whatever had the most suds at the local petfoodexpress petwash.

thank you for listening... i had these rescues since Jan and even though i have had many dogs before, seniors too, this is like a whole new world to me!

thank you!

thank you very much... yes, the shampoo we have were given is the 2% chlorhexidine and the vet did warn us that we needed to rinse it out completely. Being the pyscho person I am, I probably rinsed the dogs at least 5 times each. I don't know if its the shampoo making them more itchy or if its whatever the condition or issue that they are going thru is just getting worse... and maybe the shampoo is just not helping or aggrevating it more. Dr. said don't shampoo them anymore with it, so I think I will give them about a week or so to see if it gets better on its own and for their skin to calm down a little. Then I will try to maybe for their next bath, use the malaseb only on the itchy areas and use calm coat for the overall bath? or maybe that would be mixing too many chemicals ? is malaseb soothing enough? thanks again for all your help... I greatly appreciate it happy.gif

re Chlorhexidine type shampoos

The standard formulation for a good shampoo is a 2% solution, and very few dogs will have an allergic reaction at this concentration. There is also a 4% solution shampoo sold under Rx for more serious skin infections (ie, severe hot spots, severe skin trauma associated with Mange, etc)and if your dog has history of allergies, I would not suggest you start off with this stronger solution, but try the 2%. As with any medicated shampoo, leave the lather on the dog for about 10mins for it to be effective, then do copious rinsing (lots) to be sure that no soap is left on the skin. I have used this in the past when Malaseb Shampoo was not available to me, with same results. happy.gif

Use the shampoo Diane referred to.

EQyss Shampoo for skin conditions. I believe you would be looking specifically for the EQyss Equi Tec. It is for mange, fungus, yeast infections, rain rot, etc. It will help.

Also, Chlorhexidine, if not completely rinsed from the skin/coat, can be a strong irritant. I am surprised your vet had you use it that frequently, I would rather use a shampoo more specifically designed for itchy, irritated, or yeasty skin. Chlorhexidine is a topical antibacterial medication I generally use on bad wounds. It doesn't do anything for fungus or yeast.

Yes it will Diane! It is an antifungal shampoo also!

Rain Rot is a fungal infection of the lower Fetlock on horses that are in damp grass a lot. It is an invasive fungus, so hard to get rid of. I use Micro Tek from EQyss specifically to kill the fungus!!

The red, rust in the wrinkles is a....................

fungus and would need an anti-fungal medication. The shampoo will not get rid of this.

Hopefully, the food change will help, but could take 4-6 weeks. I feel that it does not bother them...but, it is annoying to look at.

I won't apply anything to this area. Just keep it dry.
I really hope this helps. Thanks for giving these babies a chance.

I have been using the CalmCoat Shampoo

Both dogs (but especially Mabel) do great with it. Mabel gets the itches so I was really pleased with the CalmCoat stuff, as it really has helped her with itchy relief.

itchy

This worked for us.
Malasab Shampoo 1x weekly OR 2x depednng how bad the itchy is. I then put calm coat on the bare spots 2x day. Calm coat did wonders, I cant say enough about it.
Good luck

thank you, what about the red, rust in the wrinkles?

thank you all very much for all your input... now what about the really dark, red rusty, yeast that has built up in her wrinkles, will it eventually go away on its own since kibby is on a new food now? or will i have to use that peroxide solution to get rid of it? i am kinda scared to use anything too harsh on her skin. apple cider vinegar and water? leave it on, and then rinse it off? daily? are there any other natural ways to remove it? or should i just use the shampoo?
