My bulldog Toby is taking Doxepin for allergies. Our vet said it is ok to keep him on it as long as it is doing good for him. He's not wanting to eat out of his bowl now but he will take it from my hand. He is taking 1 capsule 50 mg every 12 hrs. Should I lower the dose and just give him 1 every 24 hrs? Or should we have him taken off of it?
Maybe a smaller dose for your dog.

I have had two vets prescribe it for allergies.
It works great in my experience. I haven't had an issue with it before.

is your dog taking this because of its strong antihistamine effects, or to curb OCD behavior such as excessive licking? Are you aware that its most commonly prescribed for humans as an antidepressant? It can be Rx'd by a vet but its use is termed "off-label" meaning that the FDA has not tested and officially approved its use on animals. There are many drugs that are similarly "off-label" so don't be shocked by this...rather it means that you may find it hard to get reference info on its use on canines...have to take the info presented for human treatment and apply it somewhat. a quick internet check of this medication (for human use)
says that there are a great number of reported unwanted symptoms with its use, including loss of appetite, swelling of mouth, etc etc. so it may be that this dose is "too much" for your dog to deal with. I'd first cut the dose in half, either by dividing the medication (can't do if its a powdered capsule) or reducing its frequency...and report back to the vet after 48-72hrs if there's any notable change (good or bad). It may take those 2-3 days for a positive change to come about.
