Dread had a bout of it about a 2 months ago. THe doc prescribed antibiotics and things were good, but it looks like it might be back again. I was unable to speak to the vet today, but the receptionist (or whoever)filled the script again for the antibiotic. Anyway, after I googled and read a little about folliculitis, it said that if there are ongoing bouts of it than it might be secondary to something else. Can anyone advise me what to ask the vet when I speak with him later? I don't want to put The Boy on more antibiotics if there is something else going on with his skin.
Any advice would be welcome!

i have one w/ it
She also has allergies and there is a definite link. We do allergy shots and her Spring flair up didn't happen. But now we're into the fall allergies and I see it coming back. The only thing that works when she has it bad is antibiotics for 6 weeks.I've done the vet prescribed baths and I even tried no baths. Neither really made any difference. Wash their bedding with Dreft and change it every other day.
Hope someone here has better news for you. I feel it's a lifetime battle for us (she's 7 years old now)

allergist
My vet sent us to a allergy specialist. It was mucho $$$. I vaguely remember it costing around $200 just for the consultation. Then we had to come back for the allergy testing. I refused the skin testing because they would only do it with sedating her. SO we opted for the blood test and another $200. Then there is the serum for $150 every couple of months. Maybe your regular vet can do the testing cheaper then a specialist

Could it be allergies?
damn...we just moved recently, and I wonder if there is something he is allergic to here. What would be the best way to figure out what is causing the funk? Our new vet likes to order tons of tests and seriously will nickle and dime us to death so I want to have a plan when we go into his office. Thanks for y'alls input.

BLECH...I've been dealing with this...
For months. Kano has lick granulomas because of this. We weren't sure if it was a result of her lupus flare-up, or what. She's been on pred for her lupus, and it did nothing for her folliculitis! Then, I had her on 6 weeks of cephalexin. It started as a 2 week course. She would have some improvement, then worsen right before the end of 2 weeks. So, she ended up on 6 weeks. I upped her 3V caps to 4 a day (two in AM, 2 in PM) as I had read that omega 3 fatty acids were helpful. I think that's what finally allowed me to get her off the antibiotics (which, BTW, is not uncommon to require 4-6 weeks). I also have been keeping the leg wrapped, giving her TONS of exercise, washing the leg with an antibacterial soap daily, etc.
