Does anyone have firsthand knowledge about mast cell...

tumors? The vet said that Ollie's is low grade and not very aggressive, but it always helps to hear from those who have been through it.

Re: Thank you, it does help...

well keep us posted and good luck, hope he does well! Ussually when they get a large margin they are pretty sure to have contained it and the potential for recurrance, at least according to my vet in Fl, are next to nill. Diane

Ollie is only 5, I'm hoping he's around for many years to come. 10 sounds wonderful to me. They are removing more today to make sure the margins are clean. I was just worried because he's had it for a while, we and the vet had no idea it was an mct.

Thanks everyone, Ollie is home now and...

has about an 8 inch incision in his neck, he and I now have matching scars (thyca for me). The vet took a 1 inch perimeter all the way around. Hopefully that will be the end of it, but we will be checking him from head to toe every week.

mast cell tumors

Hi, my girl had one, a lump, on her flank area, that my son found 3 yrs ago. We brought her to our vet, a bulldog vet in Fl. and he did a needle aspirate biopsy. The results were mast cell so being a malignenet tumor with potential for quick and fingerlike spread, he removed it with a large margin and got it all. She has been fine since with no new occurances. She is now 10 and healthy as can be! Hope this helps. Diane

Yes.... Mackenzie had a Grade 1

Mast Cell tumor removed from his chest about a year ago. It was pretty deep and they took a huge amount out around the tumor to make sure they got all of it. He had 3 or 4 stitches. He has a tiny scar where the hair didn't come back in but no one would ever notice it but me. No problems since.

I think any low grade is not much concern, although we were told to check him regularily for any new ones.

New treatment

There was an article in the Aug 09 issue of Whole Dog Journal entitled "New treatment for mast cell cancer tumors: not without risks, but a good option for inoperable tumors in particular". It discussed the use of a new drug called Palladia, which was recently the first FDA-approved drug used specifically for cancer in dogs. I guess it's mainly for higher-grade tumors, but you might want to ask your vet about it, or at least look for a copy of the article for research.

I do.....

believe it or not, in a cat. She had a bump pop up on the top of her head and it kept growing and growing. We removed it and treated her per the vets recommendation with some OTC meds. It did not regrow and we did not have any problems. Good luck and many prayers your way.
