chronic ear infections- which is better, ottomax or annimax?

Dear all,

I brought kibby to the vet today to get some help with her UTI, I was able to get her to pee in a tupperware and just bring it in , instead of them sticking a needle in her bladder! But upon her checkup, it appears that her ear infection is back again... I am currently in the process of switching her food from the NB duck/potato to the instinct chicken, hopefully I find out what is causing these allergies, one day!

Anyways, the vet usually gives me Ottomax for the ear infection but ran out, she offered Annimax instead and said it would do the same thing. I told her that I wanted to check online first to see if I could find it cheaper (vet bill was $276 today, check-up, urine analysis,culture- ugh!), since I will obviously be needing it again and again...

1. which is better? or which do you prefer? which is stronger? the ottomax seemed to have cleared up her prior infection, but its been less then 2 weeks so its back again, maybe it didnt fix it 100% the first time around?

2. I have read on this forum that other people have used ottomax or annimax to cure some minor yeast issues, nose ropes, folds, tail pockets, redness, irritation... Kibby also has this itchy, red yeasty problem right now... so hopefully I can kill 2 birds with one stone?

Thanks for all your help. This is the best website in the universe and it helps me keep my sanity while trying to figure out how to fix up my girls issues! happy.gif

thank you!!

thank you so much.. I already ordered the annimax and see how it goes, I think the ear wash the vet gave me was dermapet (purple and white bottle) ... our ladies hate it, i think its the smell and greasiness of it too. I'll try your earwash as soon as I run out of this one. i'll post my shampoo question next!

MalAcetic Ultra Otic...

Its quite similar to both Panalog and Otomax, containing a antibacterial and antifungal preparation...different drugs will respond to different dogs however and it could be that your dog had become too accustomed to the Otomax and this new combo works well...thanks for the recommendation. happy.gif

Correction - Malectic Ultra Otic

No clue what the difference is, but I use the one with the black label:)

My allergy Girl, Mabel

She is only 3.5yrs old, but every so often she will break out with a ear/yeast infection. My vet had been giving me Otomax in the past but during my recent visit told me to try a different product, Malecetic Otic. I must say, it works great. Much more cost effective (large bottle rather than those tiny Otomax things) and it has worked very effectively. Her yeasty ears cleared up within 48hrs and it can be used in the folds (contains a small amount of steroid but I only use on occasional outbreaks).

I also found a great good for Mabel (Sid loves it too). It is the Fromms Grain Free Surf & Turf. Mabel has tried Natural Balance, Taste of The Wild to name a few, but this one has been great for her (touch wood) and it has now been over a year. I have no problem recommending it for bullies with allergies although of course, whats good for mine may not work the same for yours. But I have been through my trial and error lol.

Yes, they are quite similar and can often be used interchangably

however Otomax is promoted as anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal where Animax is all of these plus anti-itch. The antibiotic portion of each medication is different but both are considered 'wide-spectrum' and I'm sure that people have their favorite. Otomax is sold primarily for ear infections but can be used on minor skin problems such as irritated nose fold, etc. HTH
