My bulldog didn't have her first heat cycle until 16 months. Other then this she has been very healthy, no skin problems or allergy's. My vet tells me all the time she is the healthiest bulldog she has ever seen. The vet's next suggestion is to have her thyroid tested. Does anyone have any ideas of why she would go into heat this late? Or is this normal for some bulldogs? I did check with the breeder and her mom and litter mates had theirs around 9 months.
Looked up 'signs of abnormal thyroid in canines'
and way down on the list was reference to abnormal heat cycle, little or no sperm. Well, with your bitch having a late start but normal cycles after that, I'd say this seems quite far-fetched and I wouldn't spend the time or concern on testing her thyroid if this is the only reason. Do a little internet reading yourself for problem signs and see if there are any other reasons to suspect a thyroid malfunction.
