Anyone know anything about Fibrosarcoma???

I have a beloved 3 year old English Bull Dog, Guinness. In August of 2008, i found a lump on his left hind quarter and we had it removed to be biopsied and it came back positive for cancer, Fibrosarcoma. After the biopsy was done, i took him to an Oncologist and was told that his clean margins looked great and there was less than a 10% chance it would return. In Jan of 09 it had returned in the same area as i told it would if he it came. We had that one removed as well. Took him for a follow up and was told that they had gotten it all. In July of 09 i thought i felt something and took him in and the vet told me i was over reacting and it was scra tissue. AT the end of August i knew it was back and there was 3 tumors clustered together. I took him in and she told me she could not be certain but it appeared to back and apologized for her error.

upon doing much research, i found out many things i was never told as if the tumor is not removed entirely and the spindle cells are left, than going in for surgery could pull them apart and spread them, i was never told this. and now he has 3 tumors

we don't know what to do because i also read and was told if they di dnot get it the first time the success rate is very slim. At this time, we have decided that Guinness' quality of life is more important than our selfishness and we have not removed it as he is in no pain and it does not affect him at all. He is our first dog and i want to do what is best for him but not sure more surger y is the answer.

any thoughts??? anyone?

Our oncologist recommended feeding...

no carbs since carbs (and sugar) feed cancer. We also used a fish oil supplement. We feed Oscar Evo red meat food which was high in protein, but lower in carbs.

No, my Oscar had lymphoma...

he had golf ball sized lymph nodes when he was diagnosed. He was on a 25 week protocol and came out of remission on the last week. But I would do it again for any kind of cancer.

my answer....

years ago i had a dog with this problem....first did you have chemo? if not i am surprised.... surgery should always be follwed by chemo as this is a very tricky cancer....also we had the reg surgery with 4 inches all around...the second time we did laser surgery with another round of chemo...this was 6 years after the first surgery.....the dog lived till he was 12 and died of kidney failure...
i will say i had my reg vet do the first surgery...the second time i went to a cancer doc....animals like people have to go to a specialist especially when dealing with cancers...these doctors deal with it on an every day occurance....
do the surgery again with a cancer vet and do it before it spreads to the bone or lungs....

My dads pug went thru chemo

last year. It was a 4 month treatment every other week. It was a total of 1000.00 and he made payments each treatment. Max did WONDERFUL no side effects AT ALL. and no return of the skin cancer yet!

Thanks so much for the support! I appreciate it very much and thanks for the well wishes.

I am not sure but his is a skin Fibrosarcoma and i was told by the Oncologist it does not spread to other organs etc. Is this the same diagnosis you got or was it the lymphoma?

these days chemo treatment.....

for pets is almost equal to or better than people....they now have drugs to keep white cell counts high....no vomiting ect....chemo 5 years ago was a horrible option for pets not now.....people should embrace the use of chemo as a way to save their pet....
i feel and please understand this is me...i only have a 4 year animal science degree i am not a vet
so i dont know their reasoning but not do due some kind of treatmeant is confusing to me....any cancer can spread even skin cancer can spread.....
i would get myself to a cancer vet and discuss all the options they have....i would at this age do surgery...i would do chemo.....the younger the faster they bounce back....if you cannot afford the chemo treatment i would have the surgery using laser and have as much of the tumor taken off....

We had our boy on chemo...

for 8 months when he was diagnosed with lymphoma, and I have to say he had a pretty good quality of life while on it. He only had a couple episodes of vomiting and for the most part felt normal. I was told that chemo is a lot easier on dogs than it is on humans. I would definitely inquire about it, see a canine oncologist. Hope your baby gets better.

response/ confused

Thank you for the quick response and Chemo was never mentioned as an option even from the specialist. The vet removed all the tumors and Chemo was not mentioned as the specialist stated since the surgery had removed it all it was not needed. Only this time around did the vet mention radiation.

in addition, i was told that since it was a skin tumor it would not spread to any other organs. Is this not true???

also many people have told me that with Chemo the animal has no quality of life. I am so confused now

Can you give me a menu

can you send me a menu of what foods you did feed your dog please? this would be very helpful! AGain, thanks for all your help.

As for the fish oil, was it just tablets of fish oil as you get at a pharmacy?
